'Utterly engrossing' Guardian
It is wash-day for the housemaids at Longbourn House, and Sarah's hands are chapped and raw. Domestic life below stairs, ruled with a tender heart and an iron will by Mrs Hill the housekeeper, is about to be disturbed by the arrival of a new footman, bearing secrets and the scent of the sea.
Rezension
"Inspired...Baker has written an intoxicating love story but, also like Austen, the pleasure of her novel lies in its wit and fierce intelligence. Longbourn is a profound exploration of injustice, of poverty and dependence, of loyalty...a novel that contrives both to provoke the intellect and, ultimately, to stop the heart" Guardian

Utterly engrossing." Guardian "ONES TO WATCH Just enough Darcy to delight, as well as being a fascinating insight into the harsh working conditions of life in a grand house 200 years ago" Good Housekeeping "Debut novelist Jo Baker takes the reader on a journey back to a version of Regency England that is as much about poverty and war as social comedy and romance" Metro "This clever glimpse of Austen's universe clouded by washday steam is so compelling it leaves you wanting to read the next chapter in the lives below stairs" Daily Express

„Perspectives from the other side“

Vanessa Pludra, Thalia-Buchhandlung Berlin

You all know Jane Austens most favourite novel „Pride and Prejudice“. Well now it’s time to see Austens world fro another perspective because Jo Bakers decided to write her story from the point of view of the servants. I’m a big fan of the original story by Jane Austen and I thought that Bakers found a very special and new way to adapt this all-time classic. The main focus lies really on the servants, but you could still find amazing new sides of the original characters. I thought that especially Mr. and Mrs. Bennett were filled with new life and a background you would never imagine from the original. But even if you’re not a “Pride and Prejudice” lover you can still enjoy reading this story because you don’t need any information to understand what’s going on in “Longbourn” and I also really liked the plot that wasn’t connected to the original novel. “Longbourn” is a really nice historical novel that of course captures the interest of Austen lovers like me, but also shows a side which you don’t get to see often in other historical stories. I can only highly recommend it!
