Revisiting the Classic Studies

Electronic Inspection Copy available for instructors here
Revisiting the Classic Studies is a series of texts that introduces readers to the studies in psychology that changed the way we think about core topics in the discipline today. It provokes students to ask more interesting and challenging questions about the field by encouraging a deeper level of engagement both with the details of the studies themselves and with the nature of their contribution. Edited by leading scholars in their field and written by researchers at the cutting edge of these developments, the chapters in each text provide details of the original works and their theoretical and empirical impact, and then discuss the ways in which thinking and research has advanced in the years since the studies were conducted.
Revisiting the Classic Studies in Social Psychology traces 12 ground-breaking studies by researchers such as Asch, Festinger, Milgram, Sherif, Tajfel and Zimbardo to re-examine and reflect on their findings and engage in a lively discussion of the subsequent work that they have inspired.

Suitable for students on social psychology courses at all levels, as well as anyone with an enquiring mind

They say that you should avoid revisiting a favourite holiday destination because it is almost inevitable that the magic that attended the first visit will not be re-captured.This book is a powerful demonstration that the same cannot be said of one's favourite articles in social psychology. One of the problems with classic studies is that they are described and re-described in textbooks to such an extent that what many people -- even those in the field -- believe about a study is a distorted version of what was done or what was found. A clear benefit of revisiting the classics, under the guidance of experts, is that one gains a clearer view of the methods and findings of the original studies.
But there is so much more to be discovered through reading this volume. Like the very best guidebooks, the authors set the classic studies in context, helping the reader to understand why each study was conducted and how it was received by its contemporary audience. Just as important, they discuss the legacy of each study, showing how it opened up lines of theorising and empirical research that have helped to create the vibrant and socially relevant discipline that we know today. The net result is a volume that will inform and entertain a broad readership. This book should be prescribed reading for any social psychologist, from the most to the least experienced. For those outside social psychology, I can think of no better way of discovering what the discipline is all about
