The Outliers 01

(1)
Sixteen-year-old Wylie has recently lost her mother in a terrible car accident - and now feels as if shes losing her mind, too. Her therapist tells her that she will feel better in time - but Wylie has always been anxious and experienced heightened emotions - and she hasnt been able to leave the house for weeks. Her scientist father despairs, and her twin brother seemingly couldnt care less. Is her tenuous grip on a normal life over for good? When her best friend Cassie disappears and texts Wylie asking for urgent help, Wylie must join forces with Cassies wayward boyfriend Jasper and set off on a mission to track her down. Their search leads them to a rundown camp deep in the woods of Maine, where Wylie will discover that her father has been keeping a huge secret from her - she is an off-the-chart Outlier, displaying a ferocious degree of Emotional Intelligence (mind-reading) that means she would be the prized study subject of some very shady groups. Wylie cant trust ANYONE - and can she even rely on herself?

"The Outliers" by Kimberly McCreight is the first book of a crime/mystery series for young adults. Wylie has issues. She's always been kind of peculiar, but ever since her mom died things have gotten drastically worse - due to extreme anxiety, Wylie hasn't even left her house in three weeks now. Just as she has hit rock bottom, Wylie's best friend Cassie goes missing. Having gotten herself in trouble once again and being in need of a rescue mission, Cassie asks her boyfriend and Wylie to come and get her, but on their road trip across the country strange things happen and all of a sudden Cassie is not the only one in danger anymore... Since I very much enjoyed reading "Reconstructing Amelia" by Kimberly McCreight a few years back, I was excited when I found out this new series is penned by the same author. "The Outliers" has ist ups and downs, though, and is therefore, in my opinion, "just" a mediocre read. The book starts out slow, but gets interesting pretty fast. For the duration of Wylie and Jasper's journey the book gives off a very creepy vibe, that increases with every page you turn and reminds me a lot of "The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer", which is definitely a good thing. Unfortunately, as the story goes on and you get more background information on the characters and the situations they find themselves in, it becomes a little bit too exaggerated for my taste. Also, the ending seems a little bit rushed to me, yet also makes me want to keep going, because it concludes with a mean cliffhanger. In general, I recommend this book to young adults aged 14 and up who enjoy a thrilling story that will keep you at the edge of your seat, and in particular to fans of the "Mara Dyer" trilogy by Michelle Hodkin.
