To Kill a Mockingbird

(1)
'Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird.'
Lawyer Atticus Finch gives this advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much...
A benchmark of classic American literature, To Kill A Mockingbird approaches the highly sensitive topic of racism in 1930s America with humour, warmth and compassion, making it widely recognised as one of the best books of the twentieth century and in American literature.
Rezension
"Someone rare has written this very fine novel, a writer with the liveliest sense of life and the warmest, most authentic humour. A touching book; and so funny, so likeable" Truman Capote 20031022
Portrait

Harper Lee was born in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama, a village that is still her home. She attended local schools and the University of Alabama. Before she started writing, she lived in New York and worked in the reservations department of an international airline. She has been awarded the Pulitzer prize, two honorary degrees and various other literary and library awards. Her chief interests apart from writing are nineteenth-century literature and eighteenth-century music, travelling, and watching politicians and cats. To Kill A Mockingbird is her only novel.

If somebody asked me about my fabourite books, I would say that this is definitely number one. I have never read anything that is more compassionate and warm than this book.

Young Scout Finch grows up in 1930`s Alabama together with her brother Jem. As their father, a lawyer, defends a black man who is charged with rape, Scout is about to learn about prejudice and violence, but also what it means to be open minded and to have true friends.

Having released the book in 1960, Harper Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for "To kill a mockingbird" in 1961.
This is the 50th anniversary edition.

To reduce Harper Lee´s only published novel to a book about racism, would be a grave misinterpretion. "To kill a mockingbird" revives not only the american south of the 20´s and 30´s through the honest and clear eyes of a child, Harper Lee´s book is also one of the best written novels I ever had the honour to encounter. Reading the last 100 pages, I knew the characters so well I could foresee, what they would do. When I lost the book in a plain, before finishing it, I could not sleep well, nor read any other book, for I felt, as if I lost a great and true friend. To buy it a second time was only a matter of hours. This book not only defines great writing for us, it states also the only true definitions of courage, honesty, true honour and being human.

"to kill a mocking bird" gehört zu meinen Lieblingsbücher! Es ist sehr gut geschrieben, und erzählt eine spannende Geschichte. Mir gefallen besonders die Themen des Buches, wie Rassismus und die Oberflächlichkeit wie man Dinge und Menschen ansieht.
