'Lock Cromwell in a deep dungeon in the morning,' says Thomas More, 'and when you come back that night he'll be sitting on a plush cushion eating larks' tongues, and all the gaolers will owe him money.'England, the 1520s. Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, charged with securing the divorce the pope refuses to grant. Into this atmosphere of distrust and need comes Thomas Cromwell, first as Wolsey's clerk, and later his successor.Cromwell is a wholly original man: the son of a brutal blacksmith, a political genius, a briber, a charmer, a bully, a man with a delicate and deadly expertise in manipulating people and events. Ruthless in pursuit of his own interests, he is as ambitious in his wider politics as he is for himself. His reforming agenda is carried out in the grip of a self-interested parliament and a king who fluctuates between romantic assions and murderous rages. From one of our finest living writers, Wolf Hall is that very rare thing: a truly great English novel, one that explores the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics. With a vast array of characters, and richly overflowing with incident, it peels back history to show us Tudor England as a half-made society, moulding itself with great passion and suffering and courage.

Zitat
'This is a beautiful and profoundly human book, a dark mirror held up to our own world...Hilary Mantel is one of our bravest as well as our most brilliant writers.' Olivia Laing, Observer 'As soon as I opened the book I was gripped. I read it almost non-stop. When I did have to put it down, I was full of regret that the story was over, a regret I still feel. This is a wonderful and intelligently imagined retelling of a familiar tale from an unfamiliar angle.' The Times 'Mantel is a writer who sees the skull beneath the skin, the worm in the bud, the child abuse in the suburbs and the rat in the mattress...Turning her attention to Tudor England, she makes that world at once so concrete you can smell the rain-drenched wool cloaks...This is a splendidly ambitious book...I wait greedily for the sequel, but "Wolf Hall" is already a feast.' Daily Telegraph 'A compelling and humane investigation of the cost of ambition.' Guardian 'Mantel's ability to pick out vivid scenes from sources and give them life within her fiction is quite exceptional...Vividly alive.' London Review of Books 'A stunning book. It breaks free of what the novel has become nowadays. I can't think of anything since "Middlemarch" which so convincingly builds a world.' Diana Athill

„Wolf Hall“

Nicola Neumann, Thalia-Buchhandlung Nürnberg

"The good old Duchess of Windsor was once quoted as "I only read slim novels and fat biographies", which to me always sounded rather sensible advice.
However, a raving review of "Wolf Hall" (in an actual newspaper) made me curious. Tudors have lately been done to death with - literally - yet I had never come across this Thomas Cromwell
"The good old Duchess of Windsor was once quoted as "I only read slim novels and fat biographies", which to me always sounded rather sensible advice.
However, a raving review of "Wolf Hall" (in an actual newspaper) made me curious. Tudors have lately been done to death with - literally - yet I had never come across this Thomas Cromwell (great uncle of that annoying Oliver Cromwell), whose life apparently merited the better of 600 pages. The author did not ring a bell either. A few pages in, I was captivated, a further more pages down I decided to read on until page 290 (work the next day proved a bit of a hassle) and only within the last 50 pages it occurred to me that it would be very hard indeed to find another novel as brilliant, as excellent, as genial as "Wolf Hall".
Do read "Wolf Hall" if you don’t mind a novel with a bit of history in it.
After all, money, power, sex and a few chopped-off heads don't just go out of fashion after a couple of centuries. And if you don’t mind a book the size of a Tudor brick. ”Wolf Hall” is not for you, however, if you are a banker, lawyer or a politician with, let’s say, “pecuniary issues”. I did mention the chopped-off heads...."

PLOT: In the ruthless arena of King Henry VIII's court, only one man, Thomas Cromwell, dares to gamble his life to win the king's favour and ascend to the heights of political power. In inimitable style, Mantel presents a picture of a half-made society on the cusp of change, where individuals fight or embrace their fate with passion and courage. REVIEW: I would never have picked up this book, if it wasn´t for Marcus Mumford! And I would have definitely missed out one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is sometimes a challenging read when it comes to cheer amount of individuals that appear, sometimes it is hard to follow as a lot of people are called Henry and Thomas but that just a minor thing, compared to the amazing writing style! I absolutely adored the book from the start and I think it is unique and not the cliché kind of historical book that you can buy around every corner! Give it a try you won´t be disappointed!
