Me Before You

(9)

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time.

Rezension
'When I finished this novel, I didn't want to review it: I wanted to reread it. Which might seem perverse if you know that for most of the last hundred pages I was dissolved in tears. Jojo Moyes, the writer who produced this emotional typhoon, knows very well that Me Before You ... is a 'real weepy'. Moyes's story provokes tears that are redemptive, the opposite of gratuitous. Some situations, she forces the reader to recognise, really are worth crying over ... An affair to remember' - Liesl Schillinger The New York Times Book Review

'Destined to be the novel that friends press upon each other more than any other next year, it is a tremendous example of what commercial fiction can do when in the hands of an expert. Moyes does a majestic job of conjuring a cast of characters who are charismatic, credible and utterly compelling; Lou and Will are a couple who readers will take to their hearts as they did One Day's Emma and Dex' - The Independent

Vanessa Pludra, Thalia-Buchhandlung Berlin

This book has everything you wish for: It's funny, romantic, tragic and sad all in one. Jojo Moyes has the talent to wrap a controversial topic in a wonderful story that you will never forget. Readers who don't want the typical love story and who aren't afraid of shedding a few tears will love this book!

"Me Before You" is the first book in a heartbreaking duology by British author Jojo Moyes. This is the story of Lou and Will, two people who couldn't be more different, yet seem to just be perfect for each other. Lou is a bubbly, colorful young woman who ends up as a carer for quadriplegic Will after losing her previous job. Due to a road accident and its consequences Will isn't quite as cheerful as Lou, on the contrary: He wants to terminate his life. At first, Lou is shocked to find out that she was essentially hired to be on suicide watch, but soon she decides to help Will find something that's worth living for. In the following months both their lives change drastically, but will those changes be enough to make Will rethink his decision? Going into this novel I expected it to be a dramatic love story, because that's the impression I got when I heard about "Me Before You" from other people. Of course, that is a big part of the story, but it is so much more! It deals with the daily struggles that disabled people have to cope with, ranging from impolite stares to the inability to access public transportation without help and constant paternalism. Furthermore, the author tackles the rather complicated issue that is assisted suicide. If this book won't keep you thoughtful for a while, I don't know which one will. The characters, primarily Lou and Will, of course, I absolutely loved. The only one I stongly disliked was Lou's sister. She was just a little bit too self-centered for my taste and thus got on my nerves a lot. Due to a couple of lenghty scenes it is "just" a four-star-book for me, although I am not quite sure if it seemed lengthy to me due to the writing style or the way the audiobook was read. I am looking forward to reading "After You" and also can't wait to see how this book comes to life on the big screen. I recommend this audiobook (as well as every other edition, of course) to readers who enjoy grand love stories as well as controversial topics that stay with you long after you've finished the story.
