Once again, Christina Henry has taken a beloved classic story and put her own spin on it. A dark and twisted spin... When the pandemic first hit, hardly anyone took it seriously. But Red knew that it was only a matter of time until chaos would ensue and started to prepare herself for the worst. When people start dropping like flies and the military begins to put the healthy ones in quarantine camps, she sets out to her grandmother's house in the woods, 300 miles away. Will she make it there without catching the virus and/or getting picked up by the military? Let me start off by saying that it probably isn't the best idea to read a book about a pandemic during an actual pandemic. Even though, the situation in this novel is significantly more dire than the one we find ourselves in right now, it doesn't really help in keeping your mind off the way things are. It also touches on topics like racism and gun violence, so it is relevant in more ways than just the obvious one. I like that Red is, although handicapped, extremely self-sufficient, tough and doesn't let anybody tell her what she can and cannot do - a worthy heroine through and through. "The Girl in Red" is a truly dark story and at times rather graphic, so I don't recommend it to the faint-hearted. If you like books of the gruesome variety, I am sure you'll enjoy it, though.

I've always been a fan of fairytales, and I really like modern, dark stories based on the classics. I was very nosy about "the girl in red" but it surprised me as I've expected something different. I've always been a fan of fairytales, and I really like modern, dark stories based on the classics. I was very nosy about "the girl in red" but it surprised me as I've expected something different. Nevertheless it was a great, exciting plot and this wasn't my last novel from Christina Henry for sure. It's a brutal, sinister version of Red Riding Hood but Red is no weak girl, she's strong and ready to fight against the dangers in the forest...
