Hamlet's combination of violence and introspection is unusual among Shakespeare's tragedies. It is also full of curious riddles and fascinating paradoxes, making it one of his most widely discussed plays. Professor Hibbard's illuminating and original introduction explains the process by which variant texts were fused together in the eighteenth century to create the most commonly used text of today. Drawing on both critical and theatrical history, he shows how this fusion makes Hamlet seem a much more `problematic' play than it was when it originally appeared in the First Folio of 1623. The "tragedy of tragedies" - possibly Shakespeare´s greatest work.

Hard to believe that this country-lad from Stratford-upon-Avon appeared from out of nowhere only to produce one immortal masterpiece after the next. "Hamlet" has often - and probably justly - been appraised as his greatest work. As far as the depth, the timeless insights into human nature and the mastery of language are concerned, one can certainly subscribe to this view. One of the greatest works of literature ever written and, accordingly, an "absolute must". "The Arden Shakespeare" has for a long time been considered amongst scholars as THE edition of the grandmaster´s works, and deservingly so. All this at a very favourable price.

Komplex aber spannend, da es unendlich viele Facetten und Interpretationsmöglichkeiten bietet. Zweifellos eines von Shakespeare's Meisterwerken als er sich auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens befand.
