City of Thieves

(4)

From the writer of the award-winning Game of Thrones series for HBO based on the books of George R. R. Martin.

'David Benioff is an exceptional storyteller . . . CITY OF THIEVES is tender, illuminating, and, be warned, often shocking.' Khaled Hosseini

Four months into the siege of Leningrad, the city is starving. Seventeen-year-old Lev fears for his life when he is arrested for looting the body of a dead German paratrooper, while his charismatic cellmate, Kolya, a handsome young soldier arrested for desertion, seems bizarrely unafraid.

Dawn brings, instead of an execution squad, an impossible challenge. Lev and Kolya can find a dozen eggs for an NKVD colonel to use for his daughter's wedding cake, and live. Or fail, and die.

In the depths of the coldest winter in history, through a city cut off from all supplies and suffering appalling deprivation, man and boy embark on an absurd hunt. Their search will take them through desolate, lawless Leningrad and the devastated countryside surrounding it, in the captivating journey of two men trying to survive against desperate odds.

„"City of Thieves"“

M. Dupré, Thalia-Buchhandlung Limburg

Everyone who read Khaled Hosseini’s „The Kite Runner“ – watch out! If you thought you might never again read such an outstanding novel about friendship, I might prove you wrong.
The plot sounds absurd: two adolescent guys desperately egg-hunting in the encircled, starving city of Leningrad 1942. It’s mostly the absurdity of their mission, that welds together the mousy Lew and the bragging loudmouth Kolya, whose lifes depend on a dozen eggs.
Another great Novel by David Benioff, whose melancholic NYC-drama “The 25th Hour” is also worth a look.
By the way: Part of “The City of Thieves” is based on facts, and Lew is none other than Lew Benioff, David Benioffs grandfather.

This audiobook is intriguingly read by "Hellboy" Ron Perlman.

„"Funny, sad and thrilling"“

Nina Grahmann, Thalia-Buchhandlung Hamburg

"My grandfather, the knife fighter, killed two Germans before he was eighteen."
Quite a sentence to start with, isn`t it?

Young Lev has to fight for his life in 1940`s
Leningrad. Being accused of robbery, Lev and his fellow Kolya are to find eggs for the colonel`s wedding cake, otherwise both of them are going to get killed. But since eggs are rather rare in wartime Russia, Kolya and Lev set out on a trip full of adventures, as well as sad and often shocking moments.

This book is so special to me, as there are very few books about wartime Russia that are not "drenched in tears".
David Benioff is a highly aclaimed Hollywood-Scriptwriter ("25 hours").
