Rivers of London

The Second PC Grant Mystery

(9)

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England.

Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden ... and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair.

The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Portrait
Ben Aaronovitch was born and raised in London and all his work has reflected his abiding fascination and love for what he modestly likes to refer to as the 'Capital of the World'. He works as a bookseller when he is not writing novels and TV scripts.

„Urban Fantasy as it's finest!“

Reasons why You should start the Tales of Peter Grant:

1, Magic! It's that simple.
2. great detective work and Police snark.
3. Did I mention M A G I C?
4. a great way into the british tongue. Language skills!
5. supernatural creatures: Spirits, Gods, Vampire, Sourcerers
6. A GHOSTHUNTING DOG!!!
7. A witty Protagonist who isn't afraid to voice his inner Feelings and thoughts. Is Magic overwhelming? Yes! Do you Need more time to learn it? Yes. So you always get that time? No!

I could go on and on and on with reasons why you should read this book but I will stop at the magical number of Seven.
If you are looking for the next series of books who are so enthralling that you'll forget to sleep, this should be your choice!

What would happen if both Harry Potter's and Sherlock Holmes' universes had a baby? This book is how I'd imagine it. Funny, well written, very lovable, unique characters. Loved it! River gods, vampires, ghosts. Not exactly what Peter Grant had in mind, when he decided to become a Police Constable. A real pageturner! River gods, vampires, ghosts. Not exactly what Peter Grant had in mind, when he decided to become a Police Constable. A real pageturner!

This isn't just for Potterheads. This is for people who love good, thrilling crime storys who like the fantastic part. It also has a lot of british humor and historical facts. Toller Auftakt der Fantasy-Krimi-Reihe um den Londoner Bobby Peter Grant. Kann mit Humor, Spannung und einem kniffligen Fall aufwarten, der ganz schön magisch ist ... In Peter Grant, grown up Harry Potter fans find a worthy successor. Exciting, funny (but not cheesy) and very british!

Once again we hit a world, where magic is real, but hidden, where ghosts exist, where an outsider stumbles into a world full of magic creatures. So far, so used. BUT! Haha! Once again we hit a world, where magic is real, but hidden, where ghosts exist, where an outsider stumbles into a world full of magic creatures. So far, so used. BUT! Haha! But Ben Aaronovitch accomplishes, where so many of the other urban fantasy authors fail, namely to mix british humor, and a good british crime novel (the main focus seems to be always on good, old police work) with nicely written, realistic characters. None of the pathetic "hear, hear" and "alas" BS you get on other urban fantasy novels, which is refreshing and good. I´ll definitely keep an eye out for sequels. Oh, wait, there is already a sequel and I´m already reading it. Aaah. Good stuff!
