Alice

From the national bestselling author of The Mermaid comes a mind-bending novel inspired by the twisted and wondrous works of Lewis Carroll...

In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo the screams of the poor souls inside.

In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood...

Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago.

Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.

A bloody and thrilling new take on Alice

Maria Prietzel, Thalia-Buchhandlung Berlin

This dark and twisted story about Alice is a more brutal, but still very emotional version of the classic one - I just couldn't stop reading!

A different kind of Alice

Lea Denkel, Thalia-Buchhandlung Koblenz

Twisted, psychotic, disturbing, brutal, whimsical and absolutly amazing. A dark and gritty take on Alice. Over the years I've seen so many retellings of alice in wonderland, but none of them was as fantastic as this one. An splendidly spin on an old classic. Definitely worth a read.

Well, according to Christina Henry it went a little something like this… For ten years Alice has been locked up and heavily sedated in an asylum. After all, the stories she told about tea parties and talking rabbits can only be the phantasms of a girl who's clearly gone insane. A sudden fire helps Alice and her room neighbour Hatcher escape, but the horror doesn't stop there. Not only do they have to process their resurfacing long-repressed memories, but also come to terms with the fact that they are meant for something more than either of them anticipated. It took me quite some time to really get into this story, but I can't tell if that's due to the fact that I am not overly familiar with the little details of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" or if "Alice" is just confusing in general. After a while it really hooked me though, even though the story went into a completely different direction than I expected. This book is really dark and brutal and I wouldn't recommend it to the faint-hearted since it's quite graphic and mentions horrific abuse on more than one occasion. Even so, this book is also surprisingly deep at times. Overall, "Alice" took me some getting used to, but entertained me all the same. Even though, it's not my favority story retelling by a long shot, I am definitely going to check out some of Christina Henry's others.

Großartig morbide Adaption des Alice-Themas! Nichts für schwache Nerven! Eine Figur kruder als die nächste und doch ganz anders, als man es erwarten würde.
