Stories of Your Life and Others

(1)

With his masterful first collection, multiple-award-winning author Ted Chiang deftly blends human emotion and scientific rationalism in eight remarkably diverse stories, all told in his trademark precise and evocative prose.

From a soaring Babylonian tower that connects a flat Earth with the firmament above, to a world where angelic visitations are a wondrous and terrifying part of everyday life; from a neural modification that eliminates the appeal of physical beauty, to an alien language that challenges our very perception of time and reality . . . Chiang's rigorously imagined fantasia invites us to question our understanding of the universe and our place in it.

'United by a humane intelligence that speaks very directly to the reader, and makes us experience each story with immediacy and Chiang's calm passion.' China Miéville, Guardian

'Chiang is one of the great science fiction short story writers of all time' Jo Walton

Sehr epfehlenswert! (wie The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories von Ken Liu)

Mind-blowing, absolutely mind-blowing! Mind-blowing, absolutely mind-blowing! In eight stories, Ted Chiang takes the reader through diverse topics of life: language, religion, (the impact of) technology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, mathematics, beauty (is in the eye of the beholder), the various stages of one's life, karma (or divine intervention, not always as you think it might happen), ... The man knows clearly how to put thoughts to paper, in such a manner that it's both well-written and comprehensible for a large audience, despite certain themes not being as accessible as the others. 'Stories of Your Life and Others' is a collection of (old) short-stories - you can tell when old technology comes into play, for example, but that is absolutely not a problem when reading this in the 21st century - that make you think about life in general, about society and its rules/expectations, about your own life, about your experiences and convictions, and thus reflect upon them to maybe even steer your life into a new direction or adjust your course a little bit. Yes, it's a science-fiction book, but it's more and broader than that. In addition, he added notes on each story, how they came to be, what inspired/influenced him. Heavily recommended! (just like The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu)
