Am I Normal Yet?

It's tough being a girl

(1)

All Evie wants is to be normal. She's almost off her meds and at a new college where no one knows her as the girl-who-went-crazy. She's even going to parties and making friends. There's only one thing left to tick off her list... But relationships are messy - especially relationships with teenage guys. They can make any girl feel like they're going mad. And if Evie can't even tell her new friends Amber and Lottie the truth about herself, how will she cope when she falls in love?

Evie has just started a new school where hardly anyone knows her and her past. Perfect. Here she can be a normal girl with normal problems, like guy trouble for example, because that is something every teenage girl has to deal with, isn't it? Unfortunately, guys aren't Evie's biggest concern, because it's coming back. With new friends she doesn't want to confide in in fear of driving them away, Evie is on the verge of falling back into old patterns... "Am I Normal Yet?" tackles the very real and very difficult issue of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Never have I read a novel regarding mental health issues that was this honest before. It is heart-breaking to witness the protagonist's world falling apart around her and really opens your eyes to the way mental health issues are perceived and dealt with in today's society, which is really sobering and thought-provoking. Whilst OCD is a rather serious topic, the book also offers light-hearted parts that had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions, so it keeps from getting too dark. As if the plotline wasn't interesting enough, Holly Bourne's writing style is amazingly witty and clever which makes the book all the more enjoyable to read. I highly recommend "Am I Normal Yet" to teenagers and adults who would like to read a realistic, non-sugarcoated story about OCD. Personally, I can't wait to pick up the sequel to see how Evie's journey continues.
