Beschreibung

'Ben Aaronovitch's masterfully crafted world of magic, ghosts and gruesome crimes gives the late, great Terry Pratchett a run for his money' The Sun

'Great, great fun' Simon Mayo, Radio 2

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England.

Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden ... and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair.

The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Entertaining, but less edgy than I expected

Ingbert Edenhofer, Thalia-Buchhandlung Oberhausen

You frequently hear that Peter Grant is sort of an all grown-up Harry Potter. And while there are some similarities - mostly: there is magic in England - "Rivers of London" is more shallow than the Harry Potter series - and I am not even that much of a Potter freak. There are a few interesting character dynamics - I love the idea that there is both a male and a female Thames deity for example, and the women in Grant's life are not too one-dimensional either - so let's see where the series takes us, but I did expect something more character-driven and possibly a little more somber.

Urban Fantasy as it's finest!

Tally Thiel, Thalia-Buchhandlung Berlin

Reasons why You should start the Tales of Peter Grant: 1, Magic! It's that simple. 2. great detective work and Police snark. 3. Did I mention M A G I C? 4. a great way into the british tongue. Language skills! 5. supernatural creatures: Spirits, Gods, Vampire, Sourcerers 6. A GHOSTHUNTING DOG!!! 7. A witty Protagonist who isn't afraid to voice his inner Feelings and thoughts. Is Magic overwhelming? Yes! Do you Need more time to learn it? Yes. So you always get that time? No! I could go on and on and on with reasons why you should read this book but I will stop at the magical number of Seven. If you are looking for the next series of books who are so enthralling that you'll forget to sleep, this should be your choice!

Peter Grant is probationary constable at the Metropolitan Police Service when he gets sucked into a world he's never even dared to dream of. Magic, vampires and ghosts are a part of his everyday life now as he begins his life as a trainee wizard - and it doesn't just stop there! In Peter Grant, grown up Harry Potter fans find a worthy successor. Exciting, funny (but not cheesy) and very british!
