Sir Alistair Munroe, a Scottish scientist who travelled with British troops to explore the North American wildlife, was taken prisoner by Indians after the massacre of Spinner's Falls. Tortured and mutilated, he has become a recluse in his castle because people can't bear his scarred face and missing eye.... Sir Alistair Munroe, a Scottish scientist who travelled with British troops to explore the North American wildlife, was taken prisoner by Indians after the massacre of Spinner's Falls. Tortured and mutilated, he has become a recluse in his castle because people can't bear his scarred face and missing eye. But one day, Helen and her two small children turn up his doorstep. Helen was the mistress of an influential man, but can't live with being no more than a plaything to him anymore. Knowing that he would take away her children to punish and blackmail her, she takes a friend's advice and travels to Scotland to become Alistair's housekeeper. After all, how likely is it that her former lover will find her in a recluse's Scottish castle. Alistair is brought back to life by the little family and he soon falls in love with Helen, and she with him. But both find it hard to trust and open up to the other. When Helen's past is revealed and her children are kidnapped, they will have to learn to accept each other as they truly are to find happiness... This is a very good book with two unusual and truly likeable characters, as well as good supporting characters (in particular Helen's daughter). I liked the story a lot and would recommend the whole series. (The series is: To taste temptation; To seduce a sinner; To beguile a beast; To desire a devil)
