Albertalli, B: Upside of Unrequited

(6)
Jane Austen's EMMA meets David Levithan in this funny, authentic novel about love, relationships, and identity, from the Morris Award-winning author of SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA.
"I don't entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. You have to have a crush on the exact right person at the exact right moment. And they have to like you back."
What does a sixteen-year-old girl have to do to kiss a boy? Molly Peskin-Suso wishes she knew. She's crushed on twenty-six guys...but has kissed exactly none. Her twin sister Cassie's advice to "just go for it" and "take a risk" isn't that helpful. It's easy for her to say: she's had flings with lots of girls. She's fearless and effortlessly svelte, while Molly is introverted and what their grandma calls zaftig.
Then Cassie meets Mina, and for the first time ever, Cassie is falling in love. While Molly is happy for her twin, she can't help but feel lonelier than ever. But Cassie and Mina are determined to end Molly's string of unrequited crushes once and for all. They decide to set her up with Mina's friend Will, who is ridiculously good-looking, flirty, and seems to be into Molly. Perfect, right? But as Molly spends more time with Reid, her cute, nerdy co-worker, her feelings get all kinds of complicated. Now she has to decide whether to follow everyone's advice...or follow her own heart.

„twenty-six crushes and unkissed. “

It's official, I love ALL of Becky Albetrtali's books! I guess she just can't do wrong. Molly is such a sweet girl with such real struggles, I felt all her emotions as if they were mine. Disappointing

I was stupidly excited for this book to come out. I LOVED Simon! So can you imagine my pain when I say that this book was disappointing? So, what did I like? -Diversity! So much, everywhere, so natural and just generally YES! -Molly's and Cassie's moms: They were adorable and I was... I was stupidly excited for this book to come out. I LOVED Simon! So can you imagine my pain when I say that this book was disappointing? So, what did I like? -Diversity! So much, everywhere, so natural and just generally YES! -Molly's and Cassie's moms: They were adorable and I was so happy for them that they got married! -Simon's cameo: Because he's Simon, duh! -The ending: It wrapped up the book so nicely! -Molly was a Pinterest whore: I, myself, am not but I found it very cool of Molly. -Molly has a crush on Lin-Manuel Miranda. Who hasn't?! He's awesome! Now to my longer list of dislikes: -Molly: I coudn't connect to her, her thoughts were so repetitive, it was somehow always about her and how she wanted a boyfriend and also, I didn't get why she had those 27 crushes. Why so many? Some flashbacks revealed how she got them and I just couldn't understand her reasoning. Furthermore, Molly is fat and says she like her body but not really, though, because she doesn't see herself as beautiful until a boy tells her so??? Like, what the actual eff?! -Cassie: I thought she was a terrible sister and didn't like how she treated Molly. Not acceptable! -No plot: There was no real plot besides Molly seeking a boyfriend. -I thouroughly dislike this quote: “Here’s what I would never, ever admit out loud: a part of me always thought it was some kind of a secret compliment when someone got called a slut. It meant you were having sex. It meant people wanted to have sex with you. Being a slut just meant you were normal. But I think maybe I’m wrong about that. Maybe I’m so wrong.” Yes, honey, you are completely off your rocker. -Reid: Reid is fine but we see so little of him, I wish he had more development. Same goes for Olivia. My hope is that Albertalli's third book that will feature Leah as the main character will be loads better!
