THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
THE NEW YORK TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER
LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2019
SELECTED AS BOOK OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED, THE
DAILY TELEGRAPH,
GUARDIAN, I PAPER, IRISH TIMES, REFINERY29,
SCOTSMAN,
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH, TIME MAGAZINE, TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT, AND WASHINGTON POST From the Orange Prize-winning, internationally bestselling author of The Song of Achilles comes the powerful story of the mythological witch Circe, inspired by Homer's Odyssey
Chosen as must-read book of 2018 by the Guardian, i, Mail on Sunday, Sunday Express and Stylist In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe has neither the look nor the voice of divinity, and is scorned and rejected by her kin. Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft. When love drives Circe to cast a dark spell, wrathful Zeus banishes her to the remote island of Aiaia. There she learns to harness her occult craft, drawing strength from nature. But she will not always be alone; many are destined to pass through Circe's place of exile, entwining their fates with hers. The messenger god, Hermes. The craftsman, Daedalus. A ship bearing a golden fleece. And wily Odysseus, on his epic voyage home. There is danger for a solitary woman in this world, and Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike. To protect what she holds dear, Circe must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love. Breathing life into the ancient world, Madeline Miller weaves an intoxicating tale of gods and heroes, magic and monsters, survival and transformation.

If you yearn for power, you don't deserve to have it

V. Adamczyk, Thalia-Buchhandlung Augsburg

In this story, Circe begins her life a shunned member of her family, mocked at every turn and ridiculed for showing weakness. She grows into her power much later, after being humiliated and punished by both gods and mortal men. In exile she learns how to use her witchcraft - turning to vengeance and growing into a fearful witch, tired of men’s cruel games. Yet somehow she still manages to show empathy for those who have kindness in their hearts... Such an amazing, fresh look on the tale of Circe, a woman who’s fed up with always being handed the short end of the stick. This beautifully designed hardcover edition is also too pretty to pass up. It's now one of the prettiest books I own.

One of the best books I read this year!!

Salema Arefayne, Thalia-Buchhandlung Karlsruhe

An absolutely mesmerizing book, and storytelling that is powerfully eloquent. Miller swept me off my feet with the story of Circe’s life.Born a goddess to one of the greatest Titans she was meant for something big but Circe was despised and hated by her family for all her resemblance to mortals and differences to the divine. However much the hatred and rejection, she grew into a powerful and self-determined divinity. Circe’s story is one of rejection, loss and self-discovery,and it encompasses centuries of greek mythology and legends. This read was an absolute delight and I’m already excited to read Miller“The Song of Achilles”.

So I really really honestly loved this so much! Greek Mythology is like my favorite mythology, and I love the way this is told like one! Or, well, written. It had me captivated from page one - I love Circes growth and how she hadles all that is hurled her way. She is not a perfect goddess in any sense, and she embraces her fl... So I really really honestly loved this so much! Greek Mythology is like my favorite mythology, and I love the way this is told like one! Or, well, written. It had me captivated from page one - I love Circes growth and how she hadles all that is hurled her way. She is not a perfect goddess in any sense, and she embraces her flaws and just wants to be different, wants to be herself. I had not anticipated the way it would end and I loved that as well! If you love Greek Mythology and badass women, you will totally love this. <3
