Ian Rankin gilt als "der führende Krimiautor Großbritanniens" (Times Literary Supplement). Er wurde 1960 im schottischen Fife geboren, lebte in Edinburgh und London, bevor er mit seiner Familie für sechs Jahre nach Südfrankreich zog. Sein erster Roman erschien 1986 und wurde sogleich von der Kritik gefeiert. Der internationale Durchbruch gelang Ian Rankin schließlich mit seinem melancholischen Serienhelden John Rebus, der mittlerweile aus den britischen Bestsellerlisten nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Rankin wurde bereits mit dem begehrten Golden Dagger Award der Crime Writers Association of America ausgezeichnet, für den Edgar Allan Poe Award nominiert, zum Hawthornden Fellow gewählt und mit dem Chandler-Fulbright Award geehrt.
