Art of Being Normal

(1)
David Piper has always been an outsider. His parents think he's gay. The school bully thinks he's a freak. Only his two best friends know the real truth - David wants to be a girl. On the first day at his new school Leo Denton has one goal - to be invisible. Attracting the attention of the most beautiful girl in year 11 is definitely not part of that plan. When Leo stands up for David in a fight, an unlikely friendship forms. But things are about to get messy. Because at Eden Park School secrets have a funny habit of not staying secret for long.

Lisa Williamson's "The Art of Being Normal" is a gripping and thought-provoking novel about two teenagers who don't fit in. At the age of eight all David wanted to become when he grew up was a girl. Six years later that hasn't changed. Apart from his two best friends nobody knows about his dream, after all, he's already known as a freak all around school. Leo longs to be invisible. Nobody knows much about the new student at Eden Park School, apart from his rumored attack of a teacher that resulted in the teacher losing a finger - or so the story goes. After Leo stands up in a fight for David the two of them slowly form a friendship and discover that they really aren't that different and maybe, just maybe, could help each other out. Over the last years, books about homosexual teenagers have started popping up everywhere and succeeded in tackling a topic that's been a tabu for ages. But up until now I haven't come across a book about transgender teens. Im my opinion, Lisa Williamson is great at capturing emotions, describing self-doubts and the fear of being found out. It's interesting to read about David and Leo's experiences at school and with their families and friends. Even though the book is heart-warming and fluffy and even funny at times, it's frustrating and infuriating, too. People, especially their peers, are just so ignorant, cruel and hurtful it's sometimes hard to go on reading. I whole-heartedly recommend "The Art of Being Normal" to everyone who enjoys reading books about people that just don't really fit in, and are interested in learning more about what it means to be transgender.
