Perfect summer read!

This is what I call "realistic": the characters, the plot, everything. Creek View is a rather deadbeat Californian town. There are not many options for those kids who've just finished school. Skylar, along with her best friend Chris, wants to hightail it out of there - she has got a scholarship for college and is counting down the time until she can get out of there. That is until Skylar's mom gets fired and she is not so sure of going away anymore. Josh enlisted in the Marines as a way to escape from Creek View. But as he comes home from Afghanistan where he has lost a leg, he is now back to where he started. I love the fact that all the characters have depth and are so humanly flawed. Nobody's perfect which makes them much more real. The relationship between Skylar and Josh was beautiful to read about, they have real chemistry. I also loved the secondary characters Dylan, Chris and Marge, they rounded up the book perfectly. Heather Demetrios writes in a way where I can literally see the pictures she paints before my eyes. This book is set in summer and through Demetrios' descriptions I could practically feel the heat seep through the book. She makes everything she writes about feel so real. This is a perfect summer read and I definitely want to check out Heather Demetrios' other works now!
