A Funny, Interesting, Challenging, Thought-Provoking Read

Urrea uses fiction this time to introduce the readers from both sides of the Mexamerican border and beyond to issues of that particular region (and beyond...). By introducing hilarious characters (at first maybe seemingly stereotypical, but one thing remains true throughout the whole book: expect the unexpected!) and by including his personal experiences working e.g. at the Tijuana garbage dump, he creates vivid images and authentic characters that challenge a wide range of readers. The book was published both in English and Spanish, and one can hope it will be translated into other languages as well. It covers region-based issues as well as a wide range of personal travels of individual characters trying to find themselves. In addition, Urrea does not remain within the well-known issues and easy answers: his content and style challenge our assumptions and the partly unexpected turns make us re-think about seemingly easy answers. By his style though this comes as a pleasurable task rather than "hard work." Urrea posts a short interview from youtube on his webpage, if one would like to learn more about his personal background to this book. The hard-cover edition is well readable with good paper and medium sized font, if I'm informed correctly there is also a paperback edition on the market now. It is a pleasure to read this book - a "must" for everyone interested in either (or all...) the Mexamerican border or people on the way to themselves.
