Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

Renowned urban artist Shepard Fairey's new look for Orwell's classic dystopian tale

One of Britain's most popular novels, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is set in a society terrorised by a totalitarian ideology propagated by The Party.

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101. . .

Nineteen Eighty-Four is George Orwell's terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime. The novel also coined many new words and phrases which regular appear in popular culture, such as 'Big Brother', 'thoughtcrime', 'doublethink' and 'Newspeak'.

His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which brought him world-wide fame. His novels and non-fiction include Burmese Days, Down and Out in Paris and London, The Road to Wigan Pier and Homage to Catalonia.

A must have book in a collection. The book itself has not the best quality, therefore 4 stars.

"Big Brother Is Watching You" Winston Smith lives in a totalitarian world ruled by a tyrannical regime that watches its citizens 24/7. Questioning Big Brother, disagreeing with the Inner Party or simply addressing the fact that history is being altered again and again will ultimately cost you your life. Despite knowing this Winston enters a secret relationship with Julia, a fellow free-thinker, and together they try to join the Brotherhood, an organisation rumored to work against the regime. Of course, their plan doesn't remain undiscovered for long and both of them soon learn, what happens to people in notorious Room 101... Since its publication in 1949 "1984" has lost nothing of its topicality nor its relevance. I am truly stunned by George Orwell's visionary novel and glad that I finally picked it up. Because of the detailed world-building and extensive explainations this book is quite a slow read. Despite that I could hardly put it down. "1984" is interesting, shocking and definitely thought-provoking. This novel is a must-read for lovers of classics as well as fans of the distopian genre.
