The Wrath & the Dawn

G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers

(1)
A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she's falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, has never been Shahrzad's favorite person on account of his unexplained marrying and subsequent murdering of the kingdom's young girls. But when Shiva, her best friend, is chosen and killed by the Caliph, Shahrzad swears to avenge her and kill the boy-king. So she volunteers to marry him in order to get close to him. And close to him she gets, far closer than intended. Where she expected to find a brutal, soulless monster she finds something else entirely and starts to fall for him. Will she still be able to go through with her plan and avenge her friend? Going into this book I didn’t know what to expect of the plot at all, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is interesting, fast-paced, offers unexpected twists and turns while also including a lot of emotional scenes. The characters are diverse and intriguing and once I could differentiate between them (so many unfamiliar names) I got really invested in the story. What I enjoyed most, though, is the fact that even a person who isn’t overly familiar with “A Thousand and One Nights” is able to catch on to some of the parallels and appreciate them. I recommend this book to fans of “The Lunar Chronicles” and “Splintered” and am already looking forward to picking up “The Rose & the Dagger”.
