How do you live for thousands of years
von S. Fischer am 25.08.2009

This book is closely connected with Heinlein's Future History-stories (collected, for example, in 'The past through tomorrow'). There are several references, but the most important link is to the novel 'Methuselah's children' in which the Howard families are introduced. The founder, Ira Howard, started a program in which people with long-lived ancestors were encouraged (financially) to marry and have children with other such people. The result were people who were very long-lived, among them Woodrow Wilson Smith, aka Lazarus Long. Later mankind also developed rejuvenation techniques and as a result, the descendants of the Howard families can basically live as long as they please (accidents, war and murder excluded). Several thousand years into the future, Lazarus (born in the early 20th century),is old and fed up with life. But when he decides to finally die of old age, his descendants prevent that and try to provide him with a new enjoyment of life by several means: They ask him to tell stories from his life, several people (including beautiful women) seek his company and finally become his friends, and the most extreme ideas put into action are the cloning of Lazarus as twin sisters (whom he then raises) and the development of a time machine so that he can travel back to the early 20th century to meet his family and see the old culture of that time again. In the course of this, he not only falls in love with his own mother from several thousand years ago, but also ends up in the trenches of the 1st World War... This book isn't one running plot or story, but we are told several episodes from Lazarus' life, mixed with chapters about the people he befriends and who become his new family. The structure is taken from music, with 'variations on a theme', 'counterpoints' etc. It takes a bit of getting used to and the book needs a while to get going, bu then it's a real pleasure, full of humour, interesting characters and ideas, and above all a fascinating way of looking at our life from the point of view of someone from the future and vice versa. A lot of the stories are about different kinds of love and some of those break taboos, especially regarding incest. So if that's a problem or if you're generally prudish or on a moral high horse, this novel is not for you. One should be open-minded and at least willing to think about provocative ideas. I really enjoyed it and felt that it became more and more intense emotionally over time, while still being very funny and intelligent. It's not my favourite Heinlein, but it's still very good and - as always - far above average.
