Where the Heart Leads

HarperCollins e-books

New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens knows the world of Regency London . . . especially the exclusive enclave of luxury in which the aristocracy lived in wealth and comfort. But outside that glittering circle lay another world . . . and Laurens pulls back the curtain that has hidden it from us—until now.

Penelope Ashford, Portia Cynster's younger sister, has grown up with every advantage—wealth, position, and beauty. Yet Penelope is anything but a pretty face in a satin gown—forceful, willful, and blunt to a fault, she has for years devoted her considerable energy and intelligence to caring for the forgotten orphans of London's sooty and seamier streets.

But now her charges are mysteriously disappearing. Desperate, Penelope turns to the one man she knows who might help her—Barnaby Adair.

Handsome scion of a noble house, Adair has made a name for himself in certain circles where his powers of observation and deduction have seen him solve several serious and unsavory crimes within the ton. His pedigree, relentless intelligence, and discretion make him a deadly avenger in an elegant guise. Despite his skills—or perhaps because of them—he makes Penelope distinctly uncomfortable, but the stakes are too grave. Throwing caution to the wind, defying every rule for unmarried ladies, she appears on his doorstep late one night determined to recruit his talents.

Barnaby is intrigued—both by her problem and her. Her bold beauty and undeniable brains make a striking contrast to the usual insipid ton misses. And as he's in dire need of an excuse to avoid said insipid misses, he accepts her challenge, never dreaming she and it will consume his every waking hour.

Enlisting the aid of Inspector Basil Stokes of the fledgling Scotland Yard, they infiltrate the streets of London's notorious East End. But as they unravel the mystery of the missing orphans, they uncover a trail leading to the upper echelons of society and a ruthless and clever criminal adept at pulling strings who, becoming aware of them and their efforts, is only too ready to destroy all they hold dear, including their newfound understanding of the intrigues of the human heart.

Crime and Love

If there were half stars to give, I'd probably have settled for 3.5 stars. Although undertitled "A Cynster Novel" the protagonists are only marginally related to the Cynster Family. Penelope Ashford, sister-in-law to a Cynster, is a well bred lady, unconventional, self assured, opinionated, who has no wish to ever subject to a husband who would cut down on the freedom her brother has finally agreed to grant her. She knows how to behave in society, but is also able to move in the darker parts of London's East End. To lead the idle life of a society lady is too shallow for her, she must have a challenge in life to make it successful. So she is the organizer of a Foundling House caring for orphans of the lower classes. But there are strange occurrences of lately: four boys, who were enlisted to join her Foundling House after the deaths of their guardians, miraculously disappeared before they could be taken in. All boys came from the East End, so no police or Scotland Yard officer will pursue their disappearance but Penelope is determined to search for the missing boys. That's why she turns to Barnaby Adair, bachelor and third son of the Earl of Cothelstone, who has made his name by solving crimes within the ton. He is equally interested in solving this mystery and saving the boys and has a lot of useful connections to Scotland Yard he can involve. So the search for the missing boys can be set in motion ........ as well as the developping attachment of the two protagonists that will surely lead to a change in their preconcept of marriage. I have always liked to read a Stephanie Laurens book so far, but throughout the first part of the book my patience was sorely tempted. I was short to giving up on it, because there were no real advancements, the search for the boys only consisting of enlisting more and more people to it, with lengthy descriptions on their lives and whereabouts. But in the middle of the book things started to get better - the protagonists' love story as well as the detective part improved and the end turned out another captivating Laurens-Story. So on the whole certainly not Laurens' s best book but still readable (once you get over the boring first part) and recommendable to true Laurens fans. (This comment refers to another edition of the book.)
