Meine letzte Rezension The Haunting of Aveline Jones von Phil Hickes
The Haunting of Aveline Jones is a captivating children's horror novel that delivers a suspenseful, spooky experience perfect for younger readers—or anyone who enjoys a good ghost story with a little less gore. From the very first pages, it pulls you into its eerie world, gradually building a sense of tension and unease. Aveline is a likable, brave protagonist who is curious enough to dive deep into a chilling mystery, making her an engaging character for kids and adults alike. The author does a fantastic job of crafting an atmosphere of suspense, using the isolated seaside town setting to create a spooky backdrop that amplifies the tension. The plot itself is filled with twists and turns, and while it keeps younger readers on the edge of their seats, it's not too scary to be overwhelming, which makes it a great introduction to the horror genre for kids. While the story is solid, there were moments where the plot felt a bit predictable, especially towards the end. A few of the supporting characters could have been developed more, as they sometimes felt secondary to Aveline's journey. Overall, The Haunting of Aveline Jones is a fantastic, kid-friendly ghost story that hits all the right notes for a children's horror novel—spooky, mysterious, and just the right amount of creepy. It’s perfect for young readers who love a good mystery with a supernatural twist, even if it doesn’t have the depth or complexity of more mature horror tales.

    Dead of Winter

I did not want to put "Dead of Winter" down! It all comes down to a bus forced to stop, travelers seeking shelter, a frozen landscape, and danger - lots of danger. Who doesn't love a good finger pointing "It was you with the Axe!" book that keeps you on your toes, flipping the pages and on the edge of your seat? This was so nicely done! I had no idea who the killer was. Darcy Coates takes readers on a snow filled, twist filled, shocking ride! I also loved how the cold landscape was very much a character in this book as well. It was unrelenting, unforgiving and the perfect tomb. The characters are an interesting bunch and had me pointing my own fingers at them while reading. Perfect for cold and dark Winter Nights!

    Truly Devious

With her 2018 novel Truly Devious, American young adult author Maureen Johnson—known for collaborations with renowned writers like John Green and Cassandra Clare—launches her first murder mystery series. Truly Devious tells the story of Stevie Bell, a true-crime enthusiast and self-proclaimed detective who enrolls at the Ellingham Academy, a school haunted by a series of murders that happened years ago, all signed by the mysterious alias “Truly Devious.” Determined to solve the case that still shakes the community, Stevie, together with her new friends Nate and Janelle, uncovers clue after clue and gets closer to the killer. When the old murder spree seems to resume, there’s no turning back for Stevie—she must solve the case and end the bloody trail. All this while dealing with typical teenage challenges like a crush and demanding parents. After some hesitation, Truly Devious was my gateway into the murder mystery genre, which I had previously avoided. I have absolutely no regrets. This book is a gripping and captivating young adult novel that had me hooked from the very first chapter. Stevie Bell is an outstanding protagonist with depth and authenticity. She’s not a flawless hero who has everything under control but an ordinary teenager who makes mistakes and is still finding her place in the world. She is not one of those “pick-me” girls; despite all obstacles, she remains true to herself. This sends a positive message, especially for young readers: it’s okay to be different. Moreover, Truly Devious offers a diverse cast of characters representing a broad spectrum of cultures, sexualities, and gender identities. The novel’s mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere, paired with Johnson’s vivid and detailed writing style, immerses readers fully into the story. One initially challenging aspect is the frequent shifts between different time periods. The reader is first thrown into the original 1936 murders before jumping about 80 years forward to Stevie’s timeline, with occasional flashbacks. While this can be a bit confusing at first and slightly disrupt the flow, it effectively deepens the background of the characters from the past, whose stories are crucial to the overall narrative. All in all, Maureen Johnson has delivered a fantastic murder mystery that gripped me completely and made me eager to dive into the next installment—not just because of the cliffhanger, but due to the rich characters, detailed writing, and immersive atmosphere from start to finish. I highly recommend Truly Devious especially to teenagers interested in murder mysteries, but I also find it appealing to older readers.

    Hazelthorn

Hazelthorn by C.G. Drews is a dark and haunting story that grabs you from the first page. It follows Evander, a boy who’s been trapped for years inside a huge old estate filled with secrets. His guardian controls everything he does — he can’t leave the property, can’t go into the garden, and definitely can’t be alone with Laurie, who tried to kill him once. When the guardian suddenly dies and Evander inherits everything, things start to get really strange. The house feels alive, the garden starts spreading, and Evander doesn’t know who he can trust. This book is slow-burn horror at its best — eerie, quiet, and full of tension that builds until it’s unbearable. C.G. Drews creates an atmosphere so rich you can almost feel the damp air and hear the floorboards groan. Every detail adds to the sense that something ancient and cruel is watching. Evander is a great main character — fragile but determined, caught between fear and curiosity. His world is built on control and silence, and watching him uncover the truth about Hazelthorn is both fascinating and terrifying. Hazelthorn isn’t about jump scares; it’s about decay, power, and the things we let grow when no one’s looking. A five-star Gothic nightmare that lingers long after the last page.

    Don't Let The Forest In

Don't Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews is a mesmerizing and unsettling journey into the depths of love, loss, and the monsters we create. The story follows Andrew Perrault, a high school senior who finds solace in the twisted fairy tales he writes for his best friend, Thomas Rye. Their bond is deep, complex, and beautifully portrayed, capturing the intensity of adolescent emotions and the blurred lines between friendship and something more. The novel's atmosphere is rich with gothic charm, set against the backdrop of Wickwood Academy and the mysterious forest that looms nearby. Drews masterfully intertwines elements of dark academia with supernatural horror, crafting a narrative that is both eerie and emotionally resonant. Andrew's character is portrayed with depth and authenticity. His struggles with grief, identity, and unspoken love are depicted with raw honesty, making him a protagonist that readers can deeply empathize with. The evolving relationship between Andrew and Thomas is both tender and tragic, exploring themes of obsession, guilt, and the consequences of repressed desires. The writing is lyrical and evocative, drawing readers into a world where reality and fantasy collide. The illustrations of the forest monsters add an extra layer of horror, bringing the nightmares to life in vivid detail. This novel is not just a story about monsters; it's about the monsters within us—the fears, regrets, and desires that shape who we are. It's a hauntingly beautiful tale that will stay with you long after the final page.
