Meine letzte Rezension The Eyes Are the Best Part von Monika Kim
I’m not sure what I was expecting when going into this book, maybe a twisted horror story full of screams and jump scares but that’s not what this was. Instead, I got a psychological, feminist revenge story and about that I’m quite happy. This book is exciting from the beginning; the fast pace and mental decline of the main character makes you want to keep reading at all costs. Her anger is addicting, and you find yourself rooting for her, even if she is the “villain”. I did deduct one star because I wish we would have gotten a bit more detail on her mental state, watch her lose it a bit slower and more detailed but otherwise this was peak female rage. Do be warned though, if you are squeamish this book might not be for you. Especially when it comes to descriptions of eyes (surprise, surprise!). However, if you can handle some gore and disgust and are angry at a man (or a lot of them, let’s be honest), then this book will feel like therapy.

    Shark Heart

If you told me I would become wholeheartedly invested in the story of a man who turns into a shark I wouldn’t believe you and yet Shark Heart was the bizarrely beautiful book I never knew I needed. We follow a freshly married couple – Lewis and Wren – when Lewis gets diagnosed with a mutation that will slowly turn him into a great white shark. He will retain his human consciousness but his physical body will be that of one of the ocean's most dangerous predators. The novel focuses on their story but also that of Wren’s mother Angela, her childhood and growing up. The book’s writing is one of the most different yet comprehensible things I have ever read. At times it’s poetic, it’s vivid, at others it’s set out as a play or a movie and somehow the author cleverly makes it work. It’s a story about grief, the unfairness of life, love and how it overcomes even the hardest challenges. The author took the question “Would you still love me if I was a worm?” and decided to turn it into a heart wrenching masterpiece.

    The Poppy War Boxset

This trilogy left me in shambles. The amount of talent R.F. Kuang has will never cease to amaze me, especially since she also puts in the effort of research. The Poppy War Trilogy follows my girl Fang Runin, the probably coolest and most morally grey character you could ever come across. To escape marriage, Rin joins a school that trains children to fight wars, discovering her ability to call upon a powerful god – The Phoenix – in the process. Now Rin must learn to control her powers as the country is constantly on the brink of war. This series was made for me, and for you, and probably also for your friend. It delves into dark and brutal themes, leaving the reader slack jawed at the turns and twists. Everyone deserves to read a masterpiece at least once in their life and this is that masterpiece.

    Don't Let The Forest In

Hey... so... this was a lot. And I mean that complimentary. This book is the closest decent into madness I have ever encountered, and I am messed up about it We follow two boys, one of them an artist, the other a writer, both utterly in love with one another. Every night their stories and drawings of monsters come to life in the forest and the boys have to fight them, before they destroy everything and everyone they love. The writing is probably what made this book that intense for me. Especially in combination with the fast pace I could barely put it down. Some of my favorite sentences: “To write something nice, he’d need something nice to say. But his ribs were a cage for monsters and they cut their teeth on his bones.” “He needed Thomas, needed their lungs sewn inside each other so he could remember how to breathe. He needed to take words from Thomas's mouth and put them in his own so he had something to say.” I’ll try not to quote the whole book to convince you to read it though - that’s how beautiful the writing is – and instead I’ll try to give you actual reasons. So, if you’re looking for a queer book that isn’t quite romance in the conventional sense, a book filled with body horror, eeriness and angst. A book written by an author who knows how to juggle words and put them together into beautiful sentences, then look no further. You have found it.

    A Little Life

"A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara is probably my favorite book of all time. Although I have a hard time recommending it to people due to its sad nature. So should you decide to read this, please keep the Trigger Warnings in mind. The story follows a group of friends: Willem, an actor, JB, a painter, Malcolm, an architect and Jude, a lawyer who still has to deal with the trauma from his horrible childhood. Because of this, he remains a big mystery to his friends, keeping the details of his past from them and the reader. The reader gets to follow the boys through their individual journeys, learning more about them as the story progresses. The book is a beautiful portrayal of friendship, with amazing characters who will pull at your heartstrings. The writing is artistic, making it feel like reading a classic. Highly recommend!

    The Bookbinder of Jericho

"The Bookbinder of Jericho" is the second book I read by Pip Williams. Her first novel "The Dictionary of Lost Words" is the precursor to this book, although both can be read as standalones. However, you will get some fun easter eggs, when reading them in the intended order. Set in 1914 England, the reader gets introduced to the twins Peggy and Maude. Their mother passed away a while ago, leaving Peggy to take care of her disabled sister. The twins work in a bookbindery, both loving to read, which is uncommen for women in their time. At the start of the first world war, the men get sent away, leaving the women to keep the bindery running. This leaves Peggy with a choice: Will she stay and take care of Maude? Or will she find her place in the world and study at the university? Pip Williams is an incredible writer and you can tell that she does her research well! The way language and words are described in her books is beautiful, giving them so much power especially for women. Wether you're into historical fiction or not, I think this book could be for anyone!

    My Dark Vanessa

Vanessa Wye is only 15 years old when she gets into a relationship with her 44 year old teacher. But Vanessa doesn’t consider herself a victim. How could she if she was a willing participant? What if everything you know about love consists of twisted abuse, manipulation and dirty lies? How can Vanessa move on with her life? We’re moving back and forth between 2000 and 2017 to understand what kind of tremendous damage he created to Vanessa’s bleeding soul, crying heart and unbalanced mental moods. She told us her heartbreaking, dark journey from a dark, twisted, tarnished, exhausted mental state. The writing is what truly gives the book its meaning. It’s harsh, raw, realistic, provocative, brave, dark, bleak and terrifying! The words cut like glass pieces through your mind and you don’t drop tears for Vanessa, you just bleed out as she does.
