Meine letzte Rezension The Spellshop von Sarah Beth Durst
Are you looking for a sweet spring breeze that ripples magic and warmth through your curtains? A fresh beginning surrounded by comfort and finally some time to frolic through nature? Then The Spellshop is the perfect fit! The story focuses on Kiela, a quiet librarian who values nothing more than her solitude, and Caz, a sentient spider plant with an abnormal amount of bookish knowledge. Together they have to flea Alyssium and their treasured Library from the out-of-control revolution and relocate to Kielas's childhood home, the far away island of Caltrey, with its noisy inhabitants and a way too friendly fisherman. A beautiful, low stake read that’s easy on the eyes and mind.

    Starling House

I have a tingling feeling Starling House is going to haunt me for a lot longer than I expected it to when I started the book, and God help me, I wish it would haunt me for evermore. The story follows Opal and her younger brother, two misfortunate orphans living in a town called Eden, where it seems luck has run dry for the townspeople for a long time. Opal, a ‘deadbeat’ who steals and lies to get by, has been obsessed with a haunted house on the edge of town, that is always locked behind its gates, for as long as she can remember - but when the opportunity arises and the gates open for her, the house seems to be more than just a big pile of old stone and even older rumours, a house with dark secrets underneath it – as well as all those strange tragedies that occur whenever the mist rises around it. Untangling the mystery behind the Starling House and its Wardens was probably the most fun I’ve had with a spooky fantasy stand-alone. The romance subplot was especially well done—rarely driving the plot; it instead felt like a beautiful, subtle layer woven into it. It was a refreshing break from the typical “romantasy” trend, which oftentimes drowns you in excessive romance and loses its fantasy appeal, offering moments of tension whenever something happens between them, which continuously built throughout the book. The most striking part for me, however, was Harrow's expressive, almost poetic writing. Every chapter felt like a piece of art, and the Midwest emo vibe was perfect (pro tip: listen to “Window” by Sundots while reading). Overall, ‘Starling House’ is easily in my top three reads of 2025 and if you love strange houses and even stranger men inside of them, this book is an absolute must!

    Hazelthorn

Before I start, I must say that C.G. Drews is a truly gifted author, and I fully intend to read every single thing they will publish because, yes, it’s that good. If there’s one thing new age fantasy has gifted us, it’s botanical horror. For some reason I feel magically drawn to every botanical fantasy I can get my hands on, but Hazelthorn in particular had such a monstrously beautiful feeling to it, that it was honestly hard to shake it off, even after finishing the book. I refuse to elaborate further on the plot, simply because I believe this book should be devoured without any introduction or explanation but if you're up for very unique (flowery) body horror, a murder mystery, friends to enemies to lovers, obsession and copious amounts of gay yearning then look no further for your next read! In my opinion it’s the prime example of a horromance done right. It’s gruesome, tragic and full of pain but instead of trying to be a counter fit to this misery the romance plays right into it, it’s riddled with obsession and hatred, and it is so so satisfying to feel the dislike for each other slowly brittle away into something much softer. “If he could dig fingernails into the sides of Laurie’s face and peel back the mask, he would. He would core him like a pear and throw away the soft, rotted skin until he saw him as he really is: horrible and beautiful and real.” ― C.G. Drews, Hazelthorn

    Do Your Worst

Set in the scottish highlands, the protagonist Riley (who is incredibly well written, a breeze of fresh air in the midst of Rom-Coms main character syndrome) meets Clark, an obsessvie archaeologist, fresh off a professional scandal, whose seemingly main mission is to ridicule Rileys' career as a cursebeaker and get her off his (sceptic) back. Between curses and scottish pubs, their rivalry turns into something different as they discover the depths of the infamously haunted castle they're working on. You might think this is an autumn read but I read this book in the summer and couldn't be happier I did. Though cozy and spooky literature is often characterized with autumn, this book gave me a warm, summery feeling the whole read-through. Not because Scottland is particularly known for it's summers, but because the world building and relationship development is just that good. So, if your're looking for enemies to lovers with a whole lot of tension, ancient magic and slightly emotionally tortured men, you've found the perfect read with Rosie Danans' 'Do Your Worst'
