A social novel, it tells the story of Laura, a successful model, who was forced to leave her job and take on another to care for her young nephew, who became her sole responsibility after the death of her sister, Marie.
As the child grew a little older, she would take him with her to work at the photography studio or leave him with her roommate, Linda. She never considered contacting the family of Giuliano, the child's father, because they disapproved of the relationship from the start and had never welcomed Marie into their mansion. How could they possibly accept her son, especially after Giuliano was killed fighting as an officer in the war?
However, she never expected that his brother would search through his correspondence and discover that Marie had given birth to Giuliano's child. This discovery compelled Roberto Masini to leave his country and travel to the address to meet the child's mother. He began negotiating with her, seeking agreements and solutions to take the child to his homeland and raise him properly within his aristocratic family, thus sparing the child the hardship he would face with his mother. He thought Laura was the child's mother and addressed her as such, not knowing yet that Mary, his brother's beloved, had died during childbirth. Laura did not dare to tell him that she was the aunt so as not to weaken her position and have him take the child against her will. So she listened to his suggestions, bewildered, not knowing what to do so as not to lose custody of the child.
