Meine letzte Rezension I Killed The King von Andrea Hannah

I Fell in Love with Hope

I have to admit, I love the found family trope like no other. This book is not only wonderfully written but it made me feel with all the characters, no matter good or bad. Every single one of them feels so alive and real, from their struggles to their dreams. Each and everyone has their own story in the grand scheme of things, so on every read through you notice new things. Of course I don't want to forget about the representation in this book. Even though almost all characters are queer and have some sort of chronic medical conditions these things don't define them. Sure, they are part of who they are but every single one is so much more. To make things short, this is simply perfect. I'll never stop recommending it.

    The Unbroken

I don't know how I ever let this sit on my TBR. An epic, political fantasy in a world where being queer is the norm with a heavy focus on colonialism inspired by real world history. Tourraine, a disgraced soldier from the army of the colonizers, along with her squad of the military is sent to the country she was taken from where they have to fight against the uprising local rebellion against the colonisation. Throw family ties, magic, conflicting feelings and more than one identity crisis in the mix and you'll have this soldier questioning her entire life at once. My personal highlight: The way Tourraine's inner conflict is shown not only through her decisions but also her regrets and doubts. This is a beautiful book and I can't wait to read the next part in the series.

    The Book That Wouldn't Burn

Livira only knows the Dust, the barren world without cities, or crowds, or anything but the huts that built her home. Until the sabbers attack. She learns of cities, histories languages and much more. Evar Evantari is trapped, his world limited by the stone ceiling high above and the locked doors promising a worl outside. His brothers and sister, by circumstance, live with him among the stacks of books in many tongues. Until one book falls before his eyes and points at a way out of his library imprisionment. In a world circling around an infinitely mysterious library, one book opens a whole new depth to the collection. It won’t surprise anyone that I love books and thus reading about a library as large and mysterious as the one in the Library Trilogie by Mark Lawrence made me want to crawl in between the pages! In the beginning the story feels almost slow but that’s because you’re only getting to know the two protagonists. Livira, a genius at remembering stuff and asking questions, just like Evar, the odd one out in a family of prodigies, lead their own lives until they are connected. For anyone reading fantasy it will be clear from the start that it will happen but I was blown away with the how and when. Once that happens, I could barely put this book down, waiting for the two to meet again and then being once again hit out of nowhere with it. It’s a great play on perspectives and narration, toying with the reader and the characters in the way only a book can. Mark Lawrence used the most powerful thing a book has to force perspectives onto his readers and characters alike: narrative perspectives. But beside the literary lesson, he reaches futher and applies the same lecture about perspective to politcs and wars, making you ask yourself who really is the enemy? This book made me feel with the characters, immersed me in their confusion and conflicts, and struck me with their shock and pain. Definitely a book I’ll recommend to anyone with a knack for the world of literature, a curious mind, and a desire to dive into another world.

    Limelight

Danny skips class for the first time to audition for the performing arts Highschool LaGuardia in Manhatten. Far from his life in Staten Island, he meets Christian and learns about the New York of musicals, and artists, dancers, and drag queens. When he gets offered a place at the highschool, he has to navigae this world, trying to hold on to who he was back home and who he's become onthe stage. Limelight is a wonderful coming-of-age story set in the musical world of the 1990s. It transports you back in time and into the life of a young adult just trying to find his way. Andrew Keenan-Bolger scratches at quite a lot of important topics like the relatiosnship to one's parents, homophobia and transphobia in the '90s, the freedom of the theatre world and the struggles of a queer teen trying to find an identity between his Catholic family, his own values and his stage friends. And along the way he's trying to figure out this little thing called love. As a Broadway actor himself, Andrew Keenan-Bolger has managed to put the magic of the stage into words, giving a glimpse at the addicting spotlight and the wonders of performance art. It's a wonderful, beautiful story that moved me to goosebumps and tears. I'll definitely be reading this book again and again.

The House in the Cerulean Sea

Linus Baker is a simple caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, that is until he is called upon for a special assignment. Extremely Upper Management sends him on a classified assignment to Marsyas Island to termine wether or not Mr. Arthur Pernassus, the current master of the Marsyas Orphanage, is still fit to look after the magical children currently in his care. Nothing out of the ordinary, but he still would have liked to know beforehand that one of said children was the Antichrist. And then he goes and makes the mistake of starting to care for them. The House in the Cerulean Sea is truly a hug for the soul, it's witty and funny and kept me hooked. I honestly wish I could visit Marsyas Island and meet Phee, Arthur, Lucy and all the others, go on a Saturday adventure with them or just spend an afternoon in Talia's garden. There's so much heart and love in this story, a found family of outcasts that worm their way into the heart of Linus Baker (and me) ratehr quickly. A queer, cosy fantasy where the mismatched, loving found family stands more in the focus than the romance of the main characters. I couldn't have asked for more with this book.

    A Midsummer's Nightmare

    The Outsiders. Deluxe Edition

A must-read for everyone! Ponyboy Curtis is your average kid that doesn’t come from much, but he likes what he has and he’s proud to be a greaser. But as we all knopw, life isn’t always fair or nice and Ponyboy finds himself on the run and hiding from the police after a tragic incident between the greasers and the Socs, the social elite kids from Tulsa. While I am quite curisous about classics and what kinds of stories manage to stay relevant for so long, I did not read The Outsiders because of that (or because of school), I picked up this book because I’d already heard about the musical and the soundtrack alone had managed to bring me to tears (and still does especially after learning more abuot the story and characters). That said, I did not cry while reading this book, instead it managed something, I don’t have nearly as often: I got goosebumps. Especially the last pages of this book, with references to small details all throughout the story, had me reaching for my heaviest, fuzziest blanket. The entire story, the characters, Ponyboy, Sodapop, Johnny Cade and Dallas really stay with you for quite some time and make you think about a lot of stuff, and they remind you to always stay gold. If you’re looking for a book that feels like a warm, cozy hug, this ain’t it. But it is that awkward side hug while silently sitting side by side and leaning your head on their shoulder thing.

    A Stage Set for Villains

What a haunting book, with a refreshingly original magic system. In a world where Players are feared for the lies they tell and the powers they hold, a young girl stumbles into their casting call. Will she make it out? And are the Players truly as bad as everyone has been telling her? --- As an avid theatre fan, this book was truly a treat to read. So much intrigues, so many layers of betrayal and perspectives, and a plot brimming with twists and turns. Topped with soooo many references to theatre, this is a wonderland for stage fanatics like me. And I still can't get over the twists, the chemistry and the (near) perfect ending. If you're looking for a book, that gets you hooked and has you guessing what comes next every page you turn, then this is the one for you!

    Bad Queer

'Bad Quuer' is a wonderfully written novel-in-verse all about what it means to be queer and trying to find your way in the world. Surya, a non-binary teenager that grows up in a queer family, tries to find her way through romantic feelings and the struggles of teenagers first love. Beside the usual struggles (What does it feel like to be in love? How do I know I have a crush?), they struggle with their queer identity and what their relationship to other people might mean in regard to their and their own queerness. This is a beatufully crafted work of art, from the words to the illustrations, truthfully beautiful. It left me with goose bumps and a lot of questions. Do I advocate enough for my own queerness? And are the people around me truly aware what being queer means for me and them and our relationships?

The Priory of the Orange Tree

I admit the sheer size of this book intimidated me at first and kept this on my TBR for some time but I have not regretted picking this up for a single second. A High Fantasy that in the beginning is more like two completely different stories as the world is built around the court of the Queendom and the simple life of a priestress of the Orange Tree, only for both of the stories to become one as the worlds of our protagonists collide and weave together is not what I expected, it's even better. An epic tale with court intrigues, a unique magic system and dragons I'll keep recommending for the foreseeable future. I'll definitly be picking up the prequel (after I get over its page count ).
