Meine letzte Rezension Six of Crows von Leigh Bardugo
Thrilling, mysterious and utterly addictive – a novel I simply couldn’t put down! In the first installment of the “Glory or Grave” - duology follows a cast of six outcasts who plot to break into the most high-security prison in the world to free a prisoner that could change the world they live in forever. The cast of characters is diverse and lovable, each one has a heart wrenching story that gets told in flashbacks throughout the novel. The characters and relationships are beautifully developed without taking away from the action. This book is one of the few instances where multiple point of view actually enhances the plot and pacing of a novel. Leigh Bardugo masterfully weaves the different threads of the plot together to create a stunning tapestry of magic, intrigue and lovable characters that will keep you hooked until the very last page and beyond. Though this book is part of the Grishaverse (together with the “Shadow and Bone” and “King of Scars” series) it can be read separately without having to read any of the other series/books. (Though you’ll definitely want to afterwards) This book really is the perfect mix of action, mystery, atmosphere and characters!

    A captivating story of a young goddess who is outcast by her family but finds power in her individuality and solitude. Though the book spans centuries of time, it flies by in no time thanks to Millers beautiful prose that transports you right to the shores of Aiaia during the times of Greek heroes like Odysseus and Daedalus. "Circe" is a story about growth, spirituality, love & loss and femininity. It retells the story about one of the lesser known goddesses of Greek mythology with a finesse few other myth retellings can boast of. It checks all the boxes and is a must-read for all fans of Greek mythology!

    The Priory of the Orange Tree

    This book checks all the boxes: a fascinating story, captivating characters, a romace that has you melting and most important: dragons! We follow a diverse cast of characters in different parts of this unique wold, who all meet when the story brings them together at the end. The world feels rich and deep with lore and mythology which in turn makes the characters feel like real people, each with their own history, feelings and motives. This book is feminist without trying to be, which i appreciate very much. The lead female characters are strong without coming accross as "girlboss" type characters. There is power in femininity and emotionality and this book expresses this without being too on the nose about it. Although there is very beautiful romance aspect to this story, it doesn't overtake the plot, though it of course influences it to a degree. The book is quite a tome with almost 900 pages, which can be intimidating, but I promise its worth it at the end! All in all a beautifully written High-Fantasy book that will keep you hooked and wanting for even more pages!

    The Second Death of Locke

    Mitreißende High Fantasy mit einzigartigem Magiesystem, liebenswerten Charakteren und einer wunderschönen Liebesgeschichte. The Second Death of Locke spielt in einer komplexen, kriegsgezeichneten Welt in welcher auf jedem Kontinent ein anderes Magiesystemen existiert. Auf der vom Krieg zerrissenen Insel Idistra müssen eine Quelle und ein Magier zusammen arbeiten, um Magie zu wirken. Jedoch schwindet die Magie, seit dem vor 16 Jahren der Urpsrung der Magie auf Idistra, die Insel Locke, untergegangen ist. Grey ist eine solche Quelle und hat ihr Leben ihrem besten Freund und Magier Kiernan verpflichtet, und schützt sein Leib und Leben an der Front während die beiden immer weiter die Ränge der Scaelanischen Armee heraufsteigen. Doch Grey verbirgt ein Geheimnis, welches den Lauf der Geschichte und den ihres Lebens für immer verändern könnte. Dieses Buch war ein absolutes Jahres-Highlight! Die Welt ist reich an diversen Charakteren und Mythologie. All diese Aspekte werden organisch in die Geschichte eingewoben und keiner kommt zu kurz. Der Schreibstil ist genau ausschweifend und deskriptiv genug um einem die Welt von Idistra näher zu bringen und die Gefühle der Charaktere zu übermitteln, ohne dabei von der Handlung abzulenken. Und Handlung hat dieses Buch allemal genug: von spannenden Schwertkämpfen, intimen Momenten und heiteren Gesprächen bis hin zu epischen Schlachten ist hier wirklich alles vertreten. Das Magie-System ist sehr interessant und hätte vielleicht noch etwas durchdringender erforscht werden können, dafür sind die Beziehungen aber umso intensiver beschrieben. Kiernan und Grey sind absolut liebenswerte Protagonisten, deren Geschichten einem direkt ins Herz gehen. Zwei beste Freunde aus Kindheitstagen, deren Beziehung von Sehnsucht und Zärtlichkeit, aber auch von Pflichtbewusstsein geprägt ist. Es war wirklich ein Fest, ihre Entwicklung im Laufe des Buches zu verfolgen. Auch die Nebencharaktere sind allesamt liebenswert und fühlen sich dreidimensional an, ohne zu viel Raum einzunehmen. Jeder trägt seinen teil zur Geschichte bei, ohne dabei in klischeehafte Rollen zu fallen. Das einzige Manko ist das Pacing. Denn während die Handlung an anderen Stellen eher stockt geht das letzte Viertel dann doch vergleichsweise schnell von statten. Was jedoch das Gesamtvergnügen beim Lesen nicht wesentlich einschränkt. Alles in allem ist dieses Buch eine absolute Herzensempfehlung, sowohl für Liebhaber des Fantasy-Genres als auch für Einsteiger!
