Meine letzte Rezension My Heart and Other Black Holes von Jasmine Warga
Aysel and Roman have nothing in common- except for one thing. They both want to die. To make sure they go through with it, they set a date to do it together. In the time they have left, they get to know eachother, their lives and why they want to end it. But as time passes and the date gets closer, Aysel isn't so sure that she wants to go through with their plan anymore. This was my favorite book when I was about the same age as the protagonists. Now that I'm older and have re-read it, I have some critique. Since this is a young adult novel, there is a romance aspect. This could come across wrong, like love could somehow cure depression. Although this wasn't the case for every character, it is still something I noticed. What I love and appreciate about this book is the portrayal of mental health. I've never read a more spot-on discription on what depression feels like. The way Jasmine Warga writes about the day-to-day feelings and thoughts of someone with depression to me feels very accurate. Both Aysel and Roman have very unique personalities with an original backstory. They are extremly likable, which makes your heart break for them even more. When I first read it, I though the ending would be predictable but there were definetly shocking things I didn't expect. I think it's incredibly important for young readers to see topics like depression represented in young adult books. It can help normalize conversations about mental health and remind readers that they are not alone with their feelings and this book does just that.

    Brief an den Vater

    Brief an den Vater ist meiner Meinung nach Kafkas eindrucksvollstes Werk. Da dieser Brief von ihm an seinen Vater nie für die Öffentlichkeit gedacht war, erhält man hier einen brutal ehrlichen Einblick in Kafkas Gefühlswelt und die Beziehung zu seinem Vater. Eigentlich habe ich mich lange gesträubt, diesen sehr privaten, verletzlichen Brief zu lesen, da er nunmal für seinen Vater bestimmt war und nicht die Augen von tausenden von Leser*innen. Dennoch habe ich mich letztendlich dazu entschieden und mich geärgert, es nicht schon früher getan zu haben. Schon nach den ersten paar Seiten habe ich gemerkt, dass ich eine extrem emotionale Reise vor mir habe und spätestens nach der Hälfte wusste ich, dass es eines meiner Lieblingsbücher wird. Für Kafka Fans ein must-read.

    Das Parfum

    Das Parfum ist eines der wenigen Bücher, die ich mehrmals gelesen habe. Alleine die Grundidee des Buches ist außergewöhnlich: Ein Mann wird zum Mörder und stellt aus den Körpern seiner Opfer Parfum her. So makaber dieses Konzept auch klingt, es ist gleichzeitig so einzigartig, dass ich etwas Vergleichbares bisher nicht gelesen habe. Manche kritisieren, dass die Taten des Hauptcharakters Jean-Baptiste Grenouille kaum nachvollziehbar sind und er als Figur unnahbar wirkt. Für mich war aber genau das eine der größten Stärken des Romans. Grenouille bleibt rätselhaft, und gerade dadurch entwickelt die Geschichte eine ganz eigene, beinahe surreale Atmosphäre. Wer einen spannenden Krimi erwartet, könnte allerdings enttäuscht werden, denn das möchte dieses Buch gar nicht sein. Vielmehr erzählt Patrick Süskind auf fast märchenhafte Weise das Leben und die Taten Grenouilles. Der Schreibstil ist dabei fantastisch. Natürlich hat man beim Lesen oft Bilder im Kopf, doch Süskind schafft etwas, das ich noch nie erlebt habe: Ich hatte das Gefühl, die beschriebenen Gerüche tatsächlich riechen zu können. Die Herstellung von Parfums wird so detailliert und lebendig beschrieben und ich war überrascht, wie sehr mich dieses Thema in seinen Bann gezogen hat. Je weiter die Geschichte voranschreitet, desto bizarrer wird sie. Schon während des Lesens hatte ich das Gefühl, mich in einem Fiebertraum zu befinden und das Ende schafft es, da nochmal einen oben drauf zu setzten. Das Parfum ist ein Fiebertraum im besten Sinne: merkwürdig, verstörend, faszinierend und absolut einzigartig. Ich würde dieses Buch allen empfehlen, die Freude an außergewöhnlichen, düsteren und bizarren Geschichten haben.

    "Ich hatte den Tod ohnehin nicht verdient, denn er kostete das Leben, und davon hatte ich noch zu wenig" Spinner erzählt die Geschichte von Jesper, einem jungen Mann, der verzweifelt versucht seinen Traum Autor zu werden zu verwirklichen und endlich seinen Roman fertigzustellen. Die gesamte Handlung spielt innerhalb einer einzigen turbulenten Woche seines Lebens und genau das macht das Buch so besonders. Jesper beschreibt auf eine unglaublich authentische Weise, wie es sich anfühlen kann, jung zu sein und in einer Großstadt zu leben. Seine Gedanken haben etwas Trostloses und Melancholisches, aber auf die bestmögliche Art. Gleichzeitig ist das Buch überraschend witzig und voller skurriler Momente. Die Handlung ist stellenweise wirr und fast schon bizarr, ebenfalls im besten Sinne. Immer wieder fragt man sich gemeinsam mit Jesper, ob bestimmte Ereignisse wirklich passiert sind oder ob sie nur seiner Vorstellung entspringen. Auch die Nebencharaktere sind herrlich eigenwillig, dabei aber unglaublich sympathisch und interessant. Sie machen die Geschichte noch lebendiger und tragen dazu bei, dass man gerne in dieser ungewöhnlichen Welt bleibt. Ein Pluspunkt für mich war, dass die Geschichte in Berlin spielt. Da ich selbst in Berlin wohne, kannte ich viele der Orte, an denen Jesper unterwegs ist, was das Lesen für mich noch immersiver gemacht hat. Ich würde Spinner vor allem jungen Menschen empfehlen, die sich, genau wie Jesper, manchmal verloren fühlen oder das Gefühl haben, in ihrem Alltag festzustecken. Dieses Buch unterhält nicht nur, sondern regt auch zum Nachdenken an und schafft es, Gefühle einzufangen, die sich oft nur schwer in Worte fassen lassen.

    Beautiful Boy

    Beautiful Boy is David Sheff's memoir about trying to cope with his son Nick's addiction. Throughout the book, he reflects on Nick's childhood, desperately searching for answers and trying to understand how everything spiraled into addiction. More than anything, this is a story about the relationship between a father and his son, and about the helplessness, hope, and heartbreak that come with loving someone you cannot save because they have to save themself. This book completely broke me emotionally. It's one of those stories that stays with you long after you've finished reading it. If the topic of addiction is unfamiliar to you, Beautiful Boy sheds light on its complexity, challenges and many common misconceptions. If it is something you've experienced firsthand, there are countless moments that feel painfully real and may help you better understand your own experiences or those of the people around you. Because of that, I genuinely think this is a meaningful, emotional, and worthwhile read for almost anyone.
