Die Carrera de Indias stand nunmehr gut drei Jahrhunderte lang für die praktische Vernetzung zwischen Europa und den amerikanischen Kolonien, sie kann als Fundament des spanischen Atlantiks angesehen werden. Über die Schiffe der Carrera wanderten nicht nur Güter, Menschen und Nachrichten über die Weltmeere, auch Edelmetalle erreichten nun die alte Welt in noch nie gekannten Mengen. Das amerikanische Silber befeuerte dabei den Siegeszug frühkapitalistischer Unternehmensformen in Europa und bildete die Grundlage des ersten Welthandels. In einer wirtschaftshistorischen Perspektive lässt sich deshalb behaupten, dass die Welt in der frühen Neuzeit einen ersten wahrhaften Globalisierungsschub erlebte. In diesem Kontext befand sich der südandalusische Hafenkomplex um Sevilla und Cádiz in einer privilegierten Stellung. Aufgrund des Handelsmonopols in den Beziehungen zu Hispanoamerika stiegen diese Hafenstädte zum Kern der frühen atlanischen Welt auf. Es war dort, wo im eigentlichen Sinn die Vernetzung des Atlantiks betrieben wurde und die Flotten in regelmäßigen Abständen die Kolonien mit der Metropole verbanden. Die Lokalgeschichte von Cádiz versteht sich jedenfalls nur in einem globalen oder zumindest atlantischen Kontext.
Under the Castilian discovery and the following conquest of the Americas, an Atlantic World had started to take shape. For the three centuries to come, Europe and Spanish America would be connected by the Carrera de Indias, the foundation of the Spanish Atlantic. The ships of the Carrera transported goods, people and news over the oceans, but above all, they imported unimaginable quantities of bullion into Europe. Whilst American silver surely boosted early modern capitalist entrepreneurship in Europe, it also constituted the basis of the first world trade. This is why it may be claimed that the first true phase of globalisation had been witnessed in the early modern era. In that context, the Andalusian port cities situated between Seville and Cadiz could not have enjoyed a more privileged situation. By possessing the trade monopoly with the American colonies, these cities formed the true core of the Atlantic world. It was within their citywalls that the actual Atlantic networking was pushed ahead; there, the fleets regularly assured the linkage of the Spanish Empire.
