Besides Herman Melville Nathaniel...

Besides Herman Melville Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered the greatest novelist of the American Romantic era. But for me Hawthorne never reaches the heights of Melville's greatest works. Hester Prynne is an iconic character but lives in a quite dull story.

Not on Melville's level

"Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville is one of my favorite novels. It is so wise and populated with exciting characters. Melville is one of the two novelists considered to be the peak of the American Romantic era. The other one is Nathaniel Hawthorne, and probably "The Scarlet Letter" is his most famous novel. Well, I guess, it makes more sense to compare "The Scarlet Letter" to Melville creations like "Benito Cereno", which has also come up to be considered a masterpiece but lacks the grandeur of "Moby-Dick". "The Scarlet Letter" serves up an iconic character, namely Hester Prynne, but I am not actually sure what Hawthorne wants her to represent. She is a married woman who has a child with another man, and yet she is a heroine, and while society shuns her at first, she turns into the heart of that society eventually. Still, she could have a few more character traits, and she could easily have become a very forward-thinking female role model for centuries to come. The men around her are even less well-rounded. They seem to have Captain Ahab's monomania, but without the charisma to back them up as characters. For cultural reference, it makes sense to read "The Scarlet Letter", but for those who think that "Moby-Dick" is just too long: Melville also wrote impressive shorter fiction, such as "Billy Budd" or "Bartleby the Scrivener" - he is the preferred one!
