Die Journalistin Rachel Love Nuwer begibt sich auf die Spur von Wilderern und illegalem Tierhandel. Diese Reise ist nicht nur geprägt von kritischen Situationen, in denen sich die Autorin wiederfindet. Das Buch macht auch die Grausamkeit dieses Untergrundgeschäfts sichtbar.
Ohne Respekt vor Lebewesen und ohne den kleinsten Funken Ethik, geht es nur um das vermeintlich schnelle Geld. Vom kleinen Bauern in Vietnam, der Schuppentiere kläglich in seinen Fallen verenden lässt, bis zum Nashorn-Horn Lieferanten, der ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken in Kauf nimmt, dass mehrere Spezies ausgerottet werden.
Das Buch ist eine schwere Lektüre. Es ist aber auch ein Augenöffner. Nicht dafür, dass es passiert, sondern um aufzuzeigen, wie und vielleicht auch warum.
