After the death of their father, Mr. Henry Dashwood, the Dashwood sisters and their mother are left in reduced circumstances, as the family estate is inherited by Mr. Dashwood's son from his first marriage, John Dashwood, who is persuaded by his wife, Fanny, to provide only a small income for his stepmother and stepsisters.
