When Blood Runs Red is book 1 in the 'Empire of Blood and Greed' series and ends on a major cliffhanger. A dystopian world, power hungry founding families rewriting history, blood magic & sacrifice, and magical beasts are woven together in this dark fantasy. The world building is pretty intense and will require the reader's full attention to not loose track of the various political intrigues, shifting ties, and all the biochemistry taking place. All the while there's the love triangle: the one who got away and set her free, or the one who burns (for) her. Understanding versus obsession. The book was quite different and I loved all the twists and turns and the lingering doubts/hope of who is the biggest villain & puppet master, and who is secretly an ally? What and who will be broken beyond repair, who will be rescued last minute, and who/what will be sacrificed? Can't wait for book 2!
