Meine letzte Rezension The Starving Saints von Caitlin Starling
Wow, what a slow but wild fever dream! It has beautifully atmospheric writing and kept me on the edge of my seat as I kept thinking "How will they solve this situation?". The characters were nuanced and their shifting power dynamics only added to the tension, but in the end I would have wished for a bit more of some kind of moral to the story, as all their struggle fell a bit flat being just for the sake of it.

The Farseer Trilogy 1. Assassin's Apprentice

Robin Hobb's beautiful and captivating writing immerses us in her carefully crafted characters, magic system, and medieval-inspired world full of political intrigue within the royal family, all set against the backdrop of a much larger looming threat. Fitz’s story is bleak from the beginning. You can really feel the hopelessness of everything that is happening, and your heart hurts and breaks alongside Fitz's, only to be clumsily patched up again by the prominent and heartwarming scenes of found family. The pacing, slow and deliberate, mirrors Fitz's journey from childhood to young adulthood, revealing the world to us just as he discovers it.

    Dungeon Crawler Carl

A dude in boxers and his ex-girlfriends prize-winning show cat enter an alien-made intergalactic game show to fight for their lives and to entertaint the viewers. What sounds like the beginning to a joke is actually a hilarious fast-paced story with a dark and hidden depth. Explosions, lasers and drug-dealing llamas; this book has nothing predictable and everything to make you obsessed! Reward: You just found your new favorite series, that's your reward. That's probably on par with receiving a Celestial quest box, so don't get greedy! And now let's get out there and read, read read!

    Mistborn 1.The Final Empire

This story has everything I'm looking for in a book: flawed but loveable characters with great camaraderie and banter, and a complex plot that will only get more intricate as the series wears on. The magic system is by far my favorite one I've ever read; it's incredibly scientific yet cinematic and easy to understand and makes for some vivid and fast-paced fight scenes. But beneath this action-packed story of heists, rebellion, politics, and a bit of romance, this story is at its heart about freedom from oppression and the fact that all sentient beings are worthy of respect and being treated with dignity. There were watery eyes and some sniffles, feelings of pride and moments of excitement, some losses that shook me, and some triumphs that gave me hope again.

    Blood Over Bright Haven

This book is an absolutely stunning examination of systematic oppression and the possible consequences of trying to dismantle such a flawed and hateful system. It pulls from a variety of genres, including dark academia, sci-fi, and dystopian, and features a unique magic system based on math and coding. It draws many allegorical parallels to sociopolitical issues today, such as colonialism, environmental racism, patriarchy, classism, intersectionality, religion, and historical erasure. This book is brutal and honest and uncomfortable in its underlying truths. It will force you to look right in the face of issues that are so real for us right now and ultimately asks the question: Are we judged by the intention of our actions or their consequences?

    All Systems Red

We're following Murderbot, an introverted android with social anxiety that has hacked it's governor module and prefers to spend its time as far away from humans as possible to watch soap operas. But despite its insistence that it dislikes people, when it becomes clear that someone has meddled with their mission, it feels compelled to step in and protect the people it was designed to assist. A short, fun and fast-paced space thriller!

    The Will of the Many

Islington does a superb job of designing situations that are incredibly intricate, mysterious, and action-packed. Everyone is so nuanced that even at the end of the book I STILL don't have a clear idea who the "bad guys" are, and I was just internally screaming at Vis/Diago to please stop trusting everyone. The story features an interesting perspective on unjust power systems, especially ones where lower classes are also blamed for the upholding of the system, and rebel groups that aren't very effective (or good), and also a very sharp and relevant view on colonization and having your home being turned into "a holiday destination." The story had so many twists and turns it nearly gave me a whiplash, and the cliffhanger ending has me yearning for the next installment (hopefully coming this summer).

    Our Wives Under The Sea

Our Wives Under The Sea is a beautifully written, but melancholic and eerily haunting character study, which uses magical realism to explore the topics of human relationships, trauma, grief and losing someone you love when you no longer recognize the person they've become. It has some of the most beautiful prose I have ever read; very intense and vivid, while being both unsettling and tender, which evokes this feeling of helplessness, emptiness and isolation.

I Who Have Never Known Men

What a fascinating story! Shrouded in a quiet, melancholic atmosphere and with a constant lingering eerie tension, the narrative leaves you with a deep sense of unease, raising more questions than it answers. Ultimately, it's a contemplative journey into the heart of existence itself, challenging you to reflect upon humanity and the meaning of life. What does it mean to be human? What makes life worth living? And how do we carry on with so much unknown?

    Ozeane
