After Dark

After Dark feels much like a late night talk with your best friends and creates the same peaceful, yet slightly unsettling atmosphere of walking through empty streets in the dead of night. Nothing gets resolved - except the enigmatic inner struggles of the characters we come in contact with. Murakami is a true wordsmith and made this novel a therapeautic and simultaneously comforting reading experience. I could read this mans work and never get bored of it. There’s always something deep and true to his stories and metaphors, no matter how far-fetched or obscure.

Murakami has a way with words like no other. He manages to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary and his wording oozes with melancholy and a faint sublte sadness that sneakes it's way inside of the reader and leaves behind a strange emptiness everytime the book is put down. After Dark is a confusing, yet mesmerizing story about a random chain of events on a quiet night in Tokyo.
