The Genius is a novel written by Theodore Dreiser, originally published in 1915. The story follows the life of Eugene Witla, a talented artist who struggles to find success and acceptance in the art world. Set in the early 20th century, the novel explores themes of social class, ambition, and the struggle to reconcile artistic vision with commercial success. Eugene's journey takes him from his hometown in the Midwest to New York City, where he becomes involved with a group of artists and intellectuals. Along the way, he falls in love with a wealthy socialite, struggles with alcoholism, and faces numerous setbacks in his artistic career. The Genius is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that offers a vivid portrait of the American art scene in the early 20th century. With its richly drawn characters and complex themes, it remains a classic of American literature.1914. American author, outstanding representative of naturalism, whose novels depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreiser's books were held to be amoral, and he battled throughout his career against censorship and popular taste. The Genius, a sprawling semiautobiographical chronicle of Dreiser's numerous love affairs, was originally censured by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice.
