English Traits is a non-fiction book written by the renowned American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. The book is a collection of Emerson's observations and reflections on the English people and their culture, based on his travels to England in the mid-19th century. Emerson explores various aspects of English society, including their manners, customs, education system, political institutions, and literary traditions. He also delves into the English landscape, describing the countryside, cities, and architecture in vivid detail. Throughout the book, Emerson contrasts the English with Americans, highlighting the differences in their national character and temperament. He praises the English for their sense of order, stability, and love of tradition, while also criticizing them for their lack of imagination, individualism, and self-reliance. English Traits is a fascinating and insightful book that offers a unique perspective on English culture and society during the Victorian era. It is a must-read for anyone interested in history, philosophy, and cultural studies. My Narrow And Desultory Reading Had Inspired The Wish To See The Faces Of Three Or Four Writers, -- Coleridge, Wordsworth, Landor, De Quincey, And The Latest And Strongest Contributor To The Critical Journals, Carlyle; And I Suppose If I Had Sifted The Reasons That Led Me To Europe, When I Was Ill And Was Advised To Travel, It Was Mainly The Attraction Of These Persons. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
