""The Great God Pan"" is a horror novella written by Arthur Machen and published in 1894. The story follows the character of Dr. Raymond, a scientist who performs an experiment that allows a woman named Mary to see the supernatural world. The experiment has devastating consequences, as Mary becomes a conduit for a powerful and malevolent entity known as the Great God Pan. As the story unfolds, Dr. Raymond and his associates are drawn into a dark and terrifying world of ancient gods, supernatural powers, and unspeakable horrors. Machen's work is considered a classic of horror fiction, and has influenced many writers in the genre, including H.P. Lovecraft. The novella explores themes of science, spirituality, and the limits of human knowledge, and is known for its eerie atmosphere, vivid imagery, and haunting prose. It was otherwise, however, when within three weeks, three more gentlemen, one of them a nobleman, and the two others men of good position and ample means, perished miserably in the almost precisely the same manner. Lord Swanleigh was found one morning in his dressing-room, hanging from a peg affixed to the wall, and Mr. Collier-Stuart and Mr. Herries had chosen to die as Lord Argentine. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
