""The Girl With the Green Eyes"" is a play written by Clyde Fitch that is divided into four acts. The story revolves around a young woman named Rosalie Vanderpoel, who has striking green eyes and is the heiress to a large fortune. Rosalie is engaged to a wealthy man named Arthur, but she is secretly in love with a struggling artist named Paul. When Paul is hired to paint Rosalie's portrait, they begin a passionate affair that threatens to destroy her engagement and reputation. As the story unfolds, we see the characters navigate their desires, ambitions, and societal expectations in a world where love and money often collide. The play explores themes of class, love, and morality, and is a classic example of American melodrama from the turn of the 20th century.1909. William Clyde Fitch was, in his brief, twenty year career, the most popular playwright of his era. At least part of his success was due to his ability to hold the mirror up to his audience in recognizable, sometimes theatrically groundbreaking situations. One of his best works, The Girl With the Green Eyes begins at a wedding. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
