The Life of Thomas Telford is a biographical book written by Samuel Smiles about the life and achievements of the Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford. Telford is widely regarded as one of the most important engineers of the Industrial Revolution and was responsible for many of the major infrastructure projects of his time, including the construction of roads, bridges, canals, and harbors. The book covers Telford's early life in Scotland, his apprenticeship as a stonemason, and his rise to prominence as a civil engineer. It also details his work on some of his most famous projects, including the construction of the Menai Suspension Bridge, the Caledonian Canal, and the St. Katharine Docks in London. Throughout the book, Smiles provides a detailed account of Telford's engineering techniques, his innovative designs, and his dedication to improving the infrastructure of Britain. He also explores Telford's personal life, including his relationships with his family and friends, and his involvement in politics and public life. Overall, The Life of Thomas Telford is a comprehensive and engaging biography of one of the most important figures of the Industrial Revolution. It provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of a man who played a crucial role in shaping the modern world. But, as Telford afterwards used to say, very much depends on whether the man has got a head with brains in it of the right sort upon his shoulders. In London, the weak man is simply a unit added to the vast floating crowd, and may be driven hither and thither, if he do not sink altogether; while the strong man will strike out, keep his head above water, and make a course for himself, as Telford did. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
