""The Pit: A Story of Chicago"" is a novel written by Frank Norris and published in 1903. The book tells the story of Curtis Jadwin, a wealthy and successful businessman who becomes obsessed with trading wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade. The novel explores the greed, corruption, and moral decay of the city's financial elite during the late 19th century. As Jadwin's fortunes rise and fall, he becomes increasingly isolated from his wife and friends, and his obsession with making money threatens to consume him entirely. Along the way, the book also examines the lives of other characters affected by the financial turmoil of the era, including farmers, speculators, and laborers. ""The Pit"" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that remains relevant today as a commentary on the dangers of unbridled capitalism and the human cost of unchecked greed. But Laura, preoccupied with looking for the Cresslers, hardly listened. Aunt Wess', whose count was confused by all these figures murmured just behind her, began over again, her lips silently forming the words, ""sixty-one, sixty-two, and two is sixty-four."" Behind them the voice continued....This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
