The Reef is a novel written by Edith Wharton, published in 1912. The story revolves around the lives of four characters, Anna Leath, her fianc¿¿¿¿¿ George Darrow, her former lover Sophy Viner, and her husband's friend Owen Leath. Anna and George are engaged to be married, but their relationship is tested when George discovers that Anna had a brief affair with Owen before their marriage. Meanwhile, Sophy, who is in love with George, tries to use this situation to her advantage, causing further complications. The novel explores themes of love, marriage, and betrayal, and examines the societal expectations placed on women during that time period. Wharton's writing style is known for its psychological depth and attention to detail, and this novel is no exception. The characters are complex and well-developed, and their motivations and emotions are explored in great detail.Overall, The Reef is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a nuanced exploration of human relationships and the complexities of love and desire. It is a must-read for fans of Edith Wharton's work, as well as anyone interested in exploring the intricacies of human behavior and emotion.Sitting opposite, in the compartment from which he had contrived to have other travellers excluded, Darrow looked at her curiously. He had never seen a face that changed so quickly. A moment since it had danced like a field of daisies in a summer breeze; now, under the pallid oscillating light of the lamp overhead, it wore the hard stamp of experience, as of a soft thing chilled into shape before its curves had rounded. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
