The Saint's Tragedy is a play written by Charles Kingsley, first published in 1848. It is a historical drama set in medieval Germany, and tells the story of a young nobleman named Count Otto von Wittelsbach, who falls in love with a peasant girl named Thekla. Despite the objections of his family and the laws of the land, Otto marries Thekla and they live happily together for a time. However, their happiness is short-lived as Otto is accused of treason and sentenced to death. The play explores themes of love, loyalty, and justice, and is known for its powerful portrayal of the struggle between personal desire and societal expectations. The Saint's Tragedy is considered to be one of Kingsley's most significant works, and is still read and performed today.Lady.
