The Woman Who Did is a novel written by British author Grant Allen, first published in 1895. The story follows the life of Herminia Barton, a young woman who defies societal conventions by pursuing a career as an artist and choosing to live independently. Herminia's unconventional lifestyle and beliefs challenge the norms of Victorian society, particularly when it comes to the role of women. The novel explores themes of feminism, individualism, and free will as Herminia navigates her way through a world that is often hostile to her choices. Her relationships with the men in her life, including her father, her lover, and her eventual husband, are complicated by her refusal to conform to traditional gender roles.Throughout the book, Herminia struggles to balance her desire for personal fulfillment with the expectations placed upon her by society. As she faces criticism and rejection from those around her, she must decide whether to continue to pursue her dreams or to give in to the pressures of conventionality. The Woman Who Did is a thought-provoking novel that challenges readers to question the norms and expectations of society. It remains a classic work of feminist literature and a powerful commentary on the struggle for individual freedom and self-determination.This is the controversial book, about a woman who refuses to marry her lover because of stifling marriage laws, that Allen dedicated to his wife. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
