The Life of George Stephenson: Railway Engineer by Samuel Smiles is a biographical account of the life and work of George Stephenson, a pioneering figure in the development of railways in England during the 19th century. The book details Stephenson's humble beginnings as the son of a coal miner, his early work as a miner himself, and his eventual rise to become one of the most important figures in the history of transportation.Smiles explores Stephenson's many achievements, including his development of the steam locomotive and his role in the construction of the first public railway line in the world. The book also delves into the challenges and setbacks that Stephenson faced throughout his career, including opposition from those who opposed the construction of railways and the difficulties he encountered in securing funding for his projects.Throughout the book, Smiles paints a vivid picture of the world in which Stephenson lived and worked, providing readers with a fascinating look at the social, economic, and political forces that shaped the development of railways in England during the 19th century. The Life of George Stephenson: Railway Engineer is a compelling biography that offers valuable insights into the life and work of one of history's most important figures in transportation. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
