The Shoemakers Holiday is a play written by Thomas Dekker in 1599 and was first published in 1600. The play is set in London during the reign of Henry VI and follows the story of Simon Eyre, a shoemaker who rises to become the Lord Mayor of London. The play is a comedy and is filled with witty dialogue, humorous situations, and romantic entanglements. The story begins with Simon Eyre, a shoemaker who has made a fortune and becomes the Master of the Worshipful Company of Shoemakers. He hires a group of apprentices, including the love-struck Ralph and the mischievous Firk, who cause chaos in the shop. Meanwhile, the Earl of Lincoln falls in love with Rose Oatley, the daughter of a wealthy citizen, and disguises himself as a shoemaker to win her heart. As the play progresses, Eyre's success attracts the attention of the nobility, and he is eventually appointed Lord Mayor of London. The play also explores themes of class, ambition, and love. The Shoemakers Holiday is a humorous and entertaining play that provides a fascinating glimpse into Elizabethan London and the social and political issues of the time.Overall, The Shoemakers Holiday is a delightful play that combines romance, comedy, and social commentary to create a memorable and entertaining work of literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
